Palin Comes Home
When Sarah Palin’s plane touched down in Fairbanks, a crowd of a couple thousand people went wild. This was the first time Palin was back on Alaskan soil since she was announced as John McCain’s running mate. They chanted, “Sarah, Sarah” as Palin, her husband Todd, daughters Willow and Piper, and baby Trig made their way to the stage. The scene was electric.
I thought Palin’s speech though was a little flat. Her voice was hoarse from the non-stop campaigning and she seemed tired. Who can blame her for that? But her speech relied on many of the exact same lines used in her acceptance speech. I talked with one of her good friends who was in the crowd and she told me Sarah is really looking forward to these next few days in her home state. But they won’t be completely stress-free.

Today, Palin will speak at her son Track’s deployment ceremony. It’s being held at Fort Wainwright here in Fairbanks. Her friend tells me Sarah is emotional about Track leaving just as any mom would be.
Then after the deployment ceremony, Palin will give her first interview. ABC’s Charlie Gibson won the prize. It will be interesting to see the dynamics. Much has been made about her lack of experience. How far will Gibson go in questioning her readiness to be a heartbeat away from the presidency? Even Alaskans who like Palin as their Governor question whether she’s up to such an awesome responsibility.
Once the interview is over, Palin goes back home to Wasilla. As far as I know there are no public events Friday. Her friend tells me that Sarah requested she be with her these next couple days to give her some normalcy. She needs to laugh and take a short break from the intense spotlight she’s been in for two weeks.
I’m hearing that there might be a rally on Saturday in the Anchorage-Palmer area. His would be a send-off as Palin jumps back on the campaign trail in battleground states. Most people I’ve spoken to here are giddy with all the attention Palin and their state are receiving.
A woman came up to me last night at the rally and gave me a name of some local people who have some fresh moose for Greta Van Susteren. Apparently while she reported from Wasilla she announced that she had never tasted moose but would like to. I’m sure Greta will be thrilled.
In keeping with the adventuresome spirit, I had Reindeer last night at a great restaurant. Reindeer is domesticated caribou. My kids would be horrified that I just ate Rudolph. I have to say while it was prepared well, I’m not a huge fan. Maybe moose will be better.
Tell Greta to bring some moose back to Wisconsin !!
What about this Downs Syndrome baby?who is going to look after him.I know her husband plays a large part in it But this baby needs her too.
All this aprt does she realise the danger she has put her older son in,his picture has been shown she has given all the details and virtually drawn a map to where he will be in Iraq. What about the boys who will be placed in more danger because he is with them. Her own commonsense should have kicked in here,if she cant see that then what is going to happen if she does get that 3am call,I shudder to think.
what happened to my comment???
Maybe an arugula salad with some moose bits would suit you better.
It seems to me that since Mccain chose a woman VP the left is now trying to ditch Biden in order to have woman to woman VP race. It is like the left woman against the right woman. Wether Obama chose the right VP or not who else was he going to choose? As for me I wish the Clintons will go away they remind me of Jezzabel and King Ahab who are for themselves and not the country.

I have no doubt that Sarah can hold her on. She could run this country if need be….
All I can say is I pray to God John McCain wins this election. He is better suited for the job. The liberals ove the last 40 years have RUINED this country, and have ruined public education, lost morals, have no respect for others. We need John and Sarah in the Whitehouse…….
thanks for letting me have my say, Pat
Did anybody question Bill Clintons lack of experience and his ability to lead as commaner-in-chief? Sarah Palin will do just fine.
Welcome Home. Obama is going to dump Biden for Hillary. Biden will give some excusse to leave the ticket and Hillary will step in. Get erady for thr big money onslot of the liberal left wing DNC.
She is just what our Country needs and the timming could not be any better. John McCain had some real ensight with her selection but it also has not even brought the GOP together it has reached out to many other Americans who have been looking for someone to get back to basics……..
WE will keep praying because God makes no mistakes…..
Thanks for this picture of how the homecoming was. Looking forward to the interview and I am looking forward to FOX interviewing her….I am sure that will come in time…
This will be good practice for Sarah. After she and John McBush are exposed for their lies and slanders, she be returning home for good - in November.
Welcome home Sarah.
katieQ,
You need to get a life. Sarah and Todd can handle it. How many other mothers and fathers work who have a child with downs? If anything this will help out the child.
People!!! Please stop with your criticism of this woman. It’s non of your business how she is going to manage taking care of her family and being the Vice President. There are women who are judges, lawyers, doctors, etc. and have children and a home. NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!!!!!
She is a breath of fresh air…… She is better than Hillary for sure!!!!!
To those of you who say Palin and McCain will clean up Washington, let me remind you of the following: Larry Persily (a former employee of Palin) says that Palin was for earmarks long before she was against them (i.e., $600,000 for a bus facility; $1.75M for a dispatch center; $2.4M for waste & sewer upgrade. In addition, she hired Ted Stevens’ lobbyist to haul in the big bucks for earmarks. Previously, McCain had identified some of her earmarks that should be cut. Her first year as governor, she received $256M in earmarks; $197M her second year as governor. In 08-09, she received $8M for an airport with 8 scheduled monthly trips; $4.4M to study sea crab stock. Next year, she will receive $174M for the “bridge to nowhere,” but the money will go to the general fund. Now, can a person of this caliber really clean up Washington? And, McCain was the first presedential nomiee to use the epitheth, lipstick on a stick, when he referred to Hillary’s medical plan. When McCain use this phrase, it’s considered folksy and home-spun. However, when Obama used this appellation, he was considered sexist. How hypocritical!
Enjoy your Palin coverage. We were in Alaska for two weeks in June. It was our second trip. Everyone we talked with had positive things to say about their governor at that time. I am 67 years old and in my lieftime I have never seen anyone in politics that is as refreshing as Sara is. She is just like a next door neighbor, a friend, and there when you need them. She is the real thing. No pretense, no made up fake history, no guidance by far left liberal Kennedy or any other political entity. My wife heard her speech at the convention and headed to the computer to make a contribution to the McCain/Palin ticket. Thanks for the opportunity to tell you what we think. Imagine that, someone that cares what we think? Thanks again. George from Georgia. By the way I have nine brothers and sisters in NJ and thay feel the same way.
Thanks for the in depth coverage.
Sarah Palin has really re energized the conservative base. I know her pick has certainly made me more excited about McCain been elected. I hope he can win come November

If you were raised by such a woman as Palin you would not be asking such pathetic questions.
Watch and learn. Challenge yourself maybe one day you can be half the woman she is.
Our country is lucky to have this opportunity to elect an honorable man, a POW who came home and went on to serve his country with unselfish passion. He may not spin pretty sentences like Obama but Palin is not only a good orator she has good common sense and the energy to fight for what is right. The left has ruined our country and lowered the dollar to that of the old peso was when I was child. Our dollar value is going up and will continue to rise only if we elect McCain - Palin. If Obama were elected we would need brand new currency. REFORM vs. CHANGE? RE forming the government is what we really need. We know how to change our clothes, our attitudes and our values but that’s what we have already done and look where it got us. Let’s get back to the spirit of 1776! That’s what our votes can do this time. In God we Trust is on our money let’s make it true again.
Wow, I’m glad to see the sincere concern the leftist of this country have for Sarah P.’s children. The general concern for her small infant child and son going back into war. Because that’s what the left is truly all about: compassion, life, and the protection of our troops. Also, I have some ocean front property in Idaho if anyone is interested.
If you think Hillary will jump on board that sinking ship you are crazy! I can’t stand the woman, but she is smarter than that. All is going according to her plan. She wanted to be the presidential nominee this year, when that didn’t happen she decided to let him sink and go at again in 2012. If she were to run with BO and lose (which she would) she is screwed for 2012 because she would be branded a loser. If she were to run with BO and somehow win this year, what do you think the ticket would be in 2012…it would be BO/Clinton again. That is not what she is after. She wants to be President….not VP. Her only hope is to let BO fail (which he will) then come back in 2012 with the “I told you so!” and try her luck against Palin/Jindal.
i agree with Barry and Glenn — McCain/Palin victory is just what this country needs - back to basics. i am a mother of 4 (3 are teenagers) and a business owner. sometimes i think it is easier to go to work. if Palin can raise children and be a governor at the same time, she can handle the VP responsibilities…Katie, i am glad that Trig was not aborted like the other 90% down syndrome babies…people, in general, needs to be responsible for consequences of their actions. a woman’s choice is to have or not have sex. i think we all know that if we have sex, it could lead to pregnancy (i learned that when i was 6 years old). it is noone’s choice whether to kill an innocent baby or not kill.
The liberals need to knock off questioning Gov. Palin’s ability to be a mother and vice president. She’s done just fine as governor being able to handle both responsibilities. Besides if libs want to knock on Palin then they need to point their fingers at Obama as well. How can he possibly be president and father to 2 young girls. Just remember libs, when you point one finger, then you have the rest pointing right back at you. It’s a tired and sexist argument.
I only wish all of the soldiers at Ft Wainwright a safe mission and that they all come back safely-last time we lost too many. From one army mom to another, I am glad that Governor Palin is attending this very important ceremony. My son is there today, too and not all of us have the means to be there to see them off and I am happy for her that she has this chance. I am sure it is as emotional for her as it is for the rest of us but also as Governor it is great to see that she is honoring those troops in her state by speaking to them. On this day of all days, those bloggers who have the freedom to write what they want should be thanking our soldiers past, present, and future for that ability. I am a very PROUD Army Mom!
katieQ: That would probably be the Fox News censor..oh, I mean moderator…at work.
My husband and I are registered republicans. We have been watching all the conventions. We find Obama a nice man but young and hope the democratic party won’t ruin him by putting him out there too soon. They sure did miss the big one by not putting Hillary on the ticket. We were sure this was going to be another fairly flat election until Sarah Palin came onto the scene. As a woman , I was ready to have representation at a high level in our government. The democrats have tried to dispell Sarah’s draw for peoplebut they just don’t get the fact that there is the BIG DISCONNECT. The Obama followers are a few things we don’t really identify with and it’s not race. The exclusivity and upper income people, ie: politicians ( they are pretty well off despite what they say), movie stars, and high society people, New Yorkers. The rest of us are just plain folks who live from pay check to paycheck and do this for years raising our families, going to church,( so we don’t raise heathens), and believe in supporting our armies with our families contributions, cause Freedom Isn’t Free. Hunting is one of the few sports men and families like because it’s close to home and they really do EAT the meat. I like Sarah because she is brave. She tells who she is despite the strong draw to temper or soften this for people. She is smart and believes in a higher power than herself. She identifies with the people she represents and truly wants to help them and has proven this already. She has stuck to her beliefs and they obviously have been tested. Even though we are so indoctrinated with this society with tv and the constant talking opinions, it takes a few skills to keep things going like a job and a family and we know the genuine thing when we see it. After reading this piece on her day yesterday and now listening to this mornings news I am livid!
They have the nerve to critique her “performance” yesterday with Charlie Gibson not being confident or “smiley” her answers acceptable only because she was coached. Are you kidding me?!! She said goodbye to her son yesterday, in case anyone forgot to read the memo! He’s going to Iraq and we expect her not to be affected by that! She did the most difficult thing imaginable and the media this morning has the nerve to accuse her of looking nervous and not herself?!! UNBELIEVABLE!
Go McCain/Palin!!!!
I concur with the comment by Jeff Johnson on September 11th, 2008 at 3:11 pm. Bill Clinton said it himself when defending Obama’s experience. He said, “did anyone ever question my experience when I was in the Whitehouse.” Thanks Bill… good point!
Know what I find even funnier. When the left was questioning Palin’s ability to run her family because of her daughter’s pregnancy? I wonder if these are the same people who defended Bill Clinton when he had his little affair with Monica. So let’s talk about character. What a bunch of hypocrites.
The way the press has gone after Gov. Palin is disgraceful. They have bashed her more in a few weeks than they have ever done with Obama in the last 1 1/2 years. They show outright disrespect by not calling her Gov. Palin. Yet, through all of the mud slinging, Gov. Palin stands tall and handles all of it with her head held high The press needs to get the truth out there about the “annointed one”. How about checking to see if he is really a US Citizen. There is so much in question about Obama and his past it is unbelievable! Open up your eyes people and check it out for yourself. But it appears you are all afraid of what you will find out him.
How dare the women reporters/newcasters question if Gov. Palin can handle the VP and being a mom. I believe most of the women reporters that are bashing her have children. Yet nobody is questioning their ability to work and be a mom. What a bunch of hypocrites they are. Shame on all of you, Katie Couric, Campbell Brown, Andrea Mitchell, etc. Gov. Palin has more respect from most of us in the short time that she was selected, than you all will ever have. After all of the Gov. Palin bashing, I have no more respect for any of you. Maybe that’s why the women reporters are bashing her. The bias in the media
is absolutely ridiculous. Keep it up, because the more you bash Gov. Palin the more people will rally around her. She is exactly what we need in the White House. She is definately a women that most of us can relate to. Go Gov. Palin!!!!!
I really enjoyed Gretas special on Gov Palin last week. It was good to see a positive look at her life
