Death of a Friend on Election Day

While we celebrate another election here in these great states, there’s a sad evening south of the border. A friend of mine and a man featured on this blog several times in the past, has been killed in a horrific jet crash in Mexico City.

Miguel Monterrubio, known affectionately by his nickname on this blog ‘Mexico Tony Snow,’ was among those who perished. I met him when he was the spokesman for President Calderon, he helped me secure a place with Mexican police as they ran undercover drug stings and also an interview with Attorney General Medina-More.

Most recently Miguel was the director of Social Communication of the Ministry of Interior, he along with the Minister, a former Attorney General and several others were all killed. Reports say, some 200,000 people from nearby buildings had to be evacuated in the vicinity of the accident. The plane, a Lear Jet 45, was returning from the central state of San Luis Potosi, where the people on board had made a working visit earlier in the day. Miguel was one of the good guys, battling to save Mexico from corruption and drug cartels. He was also a strong family man and leaves behind two young children.

HERE IS THE MIGUEL MONTERRUBIO STORY. I will miss him.

Sometimes the best way to measure someone is to understand how they treat those that maybe aren’t so close. Here is the best example.

On a trip to Mexico City I was having breakfast with a man named Miguel Monterrubio; at the time he was the foreign press secretary for President Calderon. During our morning chat, Miguel mentioned he was a big baseball fan and a big fan of the Cincinnati Reds. I remembered that every time Tony Snow and I chatted he cherished his Reds, so upon returning home to the states, I dropped Tony an e-mail.

I mentioned that I had met Miguel and that he was a big Reds fan and that Tony should say hello when the Presidents meet in Merida. Much to my surprise, the plane had only been on the ground for a few minutes in Merida, Mexico when Tony asked President Calderon about Miguel and then headed right to the man and shook his hand. Miguel would tell me later that he was shocked, proud and grateful for such a gesture.

Tony would later return to Washington and send Miguel a signed photo of President Bush throwing out the first pitch at a Reds game. Miguel hangs that picture and Tony’s note proudly. All that from an e-mail. Tough to think both men were lost this year.

I am sure they are now watching baseball together from the heavens … rooting for their Reds.

I am afraid for what the future holds for this country not that Obama has been elected President. I don’t think half of the people that voted for this man know what they have done to this country. I just hope that I am wrong.

I am sickened and alarmed to believe so many “voters” are so totally removed from the realities of the world as we live in it today! I have dear friends who have beloved sons and daughters putting their lives on the line as I write this, so that we and others on the planet may remain, and become, free from tyranny and blind-minded oppression. Now, they will be left without a Commander-In-Chief who would have understood and addressed their needs in the field. If the words of this person were spoken in truth, these courageous, brave and loyal service men and women will be left without funding just as they are in the process of performing these honorable selfless, and vitally important deeds in the very protection of this precious Country, our United States of America !!!!
Ever since 9/11/01 our current President has courageously and unfailingly protected us from further attacks by those who have so vehemently sworn to kill all who do not believe in a murderous entity that is totally intolerant of all of us who love our God of Light and Love, the principle of whom our very Country was formed upon. I can only suspect that these “voters” have completely forgotten that terrible day, and certainly did not lose any loved ones then !!! As to our everyday life, I fear our once-productive citizens will be heavily penalized for any new businesses they may wish to create, and certainly may not be able to hire any workers to produce a living for their own families. What are these people supposed to do?
At this point we can only pray that God will not abandon us as hundreds of thousand of “voters” have apparently adandoned the most precious principles of our beautiful Country.

We have elected a man who is all smoke and mirrors. However, considering who he was running against this isn’t a surprise. Republicans have screwed this country so badly that we find ourselves with a charlatan now in charge.

What had happended to America. I’m very proud of our democracy and yes, the people have spoken and history has been made – I’m grateful that our country could put racism aside and make history. BUT WHY OH WHY

Dear Adam,
I am American and lived in Los Mochis on a Rotary Exchange in 1984-85. I have lived in Spain now for 17 years. My Mexican friends from the D.F. here in Madrid have assured me that this terrible plane crash was no accident. Are you hearing the same? What a sad state of affairs and I am so sorry for your loss.
Take care,
Annie

I am sorry about the loss of your friend. Being a Reds fan myself makes this story more personal for me. Guess he and Tony Snow are still cheering the team on.

I am a Republican voter. I hope Obama does a good job as our next President, but I have reservations about his leadership. Some of the things he has said in his speeches (not the Meadia coverage) has given me great concern as to where he is going to lead our country. Somehow I do not think he believes our country should remain a Christian nation, and does not want us to worship ourGod.

Dear Adam
I understand how you feel. I had the pleasure to work with Miguel for several years in London. And I can’t speak highly enough about him. Mexico has lost some of the best men it would ever have. Miguel was a very talented, intelligent, capable man, but overall a great human being. He has left many friends around the world that are going to continue fighting for his ideals, to make a better Mexico and a better world. His example as a loving father and husband, as great friend and as great leader will be always remembered. My sincere sympathy to his wonderful wife and his family.
