Former “Idol” Brings Rock ‘n’ Roll to Broadway
By Ashley Dvorkin, FOX News entertainment producer
Finally, someone figured out how to make my iPod into a musical!
I had the chance to see “Rock of Ages” — which just came to NY — starring former American Idol Constantine Maroulis. I checked it out before Maroulis came to FOX to chat about his latest projects, and I realized I can play my 80’s rock music loud and proud because there are plenty of us out there! The show is Off Broadway at New World Stages and tells the tale of love, heartbreak, fame, big hair, leather pants, and the passion of ROCK all through the songs that have told those stories for decades.
Ever think you’d hear a passionate ensemble number sung to… “Every Rose Has Its Thorn?” How about a rock star telling his touring woes to… “Wanted Dead or Alive?” From Poison to Bon Jovi, Night Ranger to REO Speedwagon and more, audience members may not be able to resist singing along (guilty!.)
Constantine is Drew, our dreamer who wants to sing to stardom and is in love with “Oh” Sherrie. Along with hilarious characters like the ultimate rocker “Stacee Jaxx” played by Will Swenson and a host with a great wardrobe (I won’t give more away) played by Mitchell Jarvis, they all fight to keep their legendary rock club open! After all they “Built This City on Rock and Roll!”
While the Idol graduate was talking to FOX about all of his latest projects from stage to screen (and even about teaming up for an upcoming concert with Ace Young who happens to be right around the block in “Grease!.)” he described his “Rock of Ages” as sort of a “metaphor” of those hairband videos we all know.
So… if you feel like breaking out the hairspray, the mean electric guitars, (and yes… giving that “international-symbol-for-rock” hands-up again) you know where to find band practice!
