Goodbye to Gitmo?

In a report released Monday afternoon by the Associated Press, two presidential transition team advisers say President-elect Barack Obama is preparing an executive order to close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Sources say the order could be issued as soon as Jan. 20, Obama’s first day in office.

The prison will most likely not close any time soon, however, as nearly 250 Al-Qaeda and Taliban suspects and potential witnesses still occupy the facility. Still, the order would begin action on finding alternate facilities for the jailed detainees.

What do you think? Take our poll below and/or comment to have your say!

I disagree with the closing of Gitmo. This idea is being totally engineered by “political correctness” idiots.
We are in a war on terrorism, and most of the U.S citizens would like to win. To import terrorists is complete idiocy, (we already have enough here) and those who want them here must be idiots also. The idea of allowing them to have access to the U.S. judicial system is a total waste of millions of dollars of the taxpayers money and years of time.
Mr. Murtha is one of the biggest fans of realeasing them to his home state and have the taxpayers pay for him to build a new prison in his home state. I say,”if he loves them so much, he should be with them”. He is such a dishonest person.
Keep the detainees there and let them go through a NON POLITICAL military wartime court.

Comment by Scott

If they’re going to put these terrorists into American prisons, they should place them into the general population and see if they last a month.

I am in total disagreement with his decision to close GTMO. To all you peopel who say we, americans, violate the geneva conventions, magna carta and all that stuff, you are ignorant, you base all your reasoning off what the news and other things like that. I say we should keep it open because of the simple fact that they are or have affiliations with terrorism. Also I can say for a fact that they arent mistreated there, in fact they get more medical treatment than the guards down there do, they get fed better and are treated better. So please do us a favor and shut up with your comments about violations of what ever act/convention/rights. Thanks!

Comment by richard bratton

if they insist on closing gitmo let’s send them to washington dc or alcatraz! the guards should be either qualified relatives of 9-11 victims, infantrymen returning from the middle east! general swatzkoph would be a great honorary warden!! if they’re in dc the bleeding hearts can go visiting daily to make sure thy’re being coddled properly!!! if it’s alcatraz pelosi can make michelle a special envoy to ensure they have adequate care and conselling!!!!!

Comment by Sam

What an idiot. I don’t mind him closing the prison, there were some questionable practices there, but granting them citizens rights and trying them in civilian courts is wrong. I hope the prosecutors in the Nurmberg trials are rolling in their graves. Trying terrorists and war criminals in US courts is stupid. Since when are captured pow’s given citizens rights?

Comment by Concerned American

This is the most ridiculous move any President of OUR great nation could make. These people are terrorists and one beheaded Daniel Pearl. Maybe a prison should be built in DC so they can be watched carefully by allll that want this!!!!!!!

Comment by xeli

The fact that Obama is closing Gitmo does not warrant the “idea” that terrorists are going to roam free among us this is totally ludicrous. Obama’s administration circulated a draft executive order that calls for closing the Guantanamo Bay detention center within a year and reviewing the cases of the nearly 245 inmates still held there. The order also would suspend pending war crimes cases for 120 days. These prisoners are just being “held” no trials no convictions just a big waste of our tax money. Gitmo costs approximately 90 million dollars a year to run and for what? To hold random suspects which include children? Lets not forget the 12 year old that was released a few years ago and the 15 year old Canadian boy that was tortured, there are people still there from the Mariel Boat lift for Christs sake!!! David Iglesias, New Mexico’s former U.S. attorney and current prosecution attorney with the Office of Military Commission will have the position of actually prosecuting the remaining terrorists. Part of the EO is for the administration to determine what happens to convicted terrorists. Perhaps there will be a “designated” federal prison with their name on it who knows, but I doubt Obama would seriously allow real terrorists to roam free, we still have the death penalty you know.

Comment by Lou

As a disabled purple heart American veteran I feel that it is a shame and a disgrace to allow the enemies of the United States to go free. From the experience that I had in the war zone they have not had any kind of sympathy for us and would love to see all Americans dead.

President Obama: You seem to be in a quandary as to where to relocate the combatants at Gitmo when you shut it down. I suggest you move them to the White House basement, probably the most secure place on the planet with the possible exception of the gold vault at Ft. Knox.

Comment by scott

Close it down and send them to Crawford!

Comment by Steve

If anyone truly thinks there is a correst answer to this problem…Think again! World Opinion and politics are the major factors for consideration. And, as you know there is no winning team in either of those arenas! So, what do we do? We will make a whole bunch of Americans somewhere very upset no matter what happens. Obviously we will not execute them which probably would have been the best solution. Cuba doesn’t want them if you can believe that! It does appear though that the government in the Congo might be able to use them! They may wish to wait until the genocide that is most likely going to happen all over again to become a reality. They will then need a hardened bunch of confirmed terrorist to do their bidding!

On a serious note! I think they should be relocated them to Alcatraz island. Reopen that old federal prison and and operate it using the military. Yes, it will be an expensive consideration, but what won’t be? They wll have containment away from the land popualtion. Of course Dianne Feinstein will not hold still for that solution, but there you go with the Politics again. We have one year before they are put somewhere so we better figure out how to get around them having rights when brought to the United States. Our lawyers here would make it a circus. Can you imagine their defense team supenoing every military soldier who may have had contact with them and asking them under oath if they witness any harsh or unusual punishment. That is just the start! Wow!

Comment by Diane Pence

Transfer the Gitmo detainees to Fort Lee so our new President and VP can visit their new friends often to ensure they are well taken care of. That “personal” touch goes a long way.

Comment by Diane Pence

Send the detainees to Fort Lee. That way the new President and Vice President can visit their new friends and make sure they are well cared for. That personal touch goes a long way. :)

Comment by Cindy

Obama should close Gitmo and send the prisoners back to Iraq to be tried in the Iraqi courts.

Comment by Edward Skinner

Gitmo is just a place. Close it and you still have to put these people somewhere. I suspect the real motivaion of the ones that wnat it closed is the eventual release of those held. Release them where?
For all those that are concerned with the welfare of these jihadis please tell me very specifically what it is you want to happen with these people. Please be very specific.

Comment by elizabethhwhite

It is ridiculous to close Gitmo. If they close it all prisoners should be sent to Washington, DC where all of the politicians who have no idea where to put them can figure it out. At least send them to states with Democratic congressmen. Europe doesn’t want them. That is for sure.

Comment by Daughter of Liberty

For the many people who are debating whether or not we should close down Guantanamo Bay, here is something to think about… When I was a young girl of about 9/10 my knowledge of what was going on in politics was not large but some things I was old enough to understand and remember. I recall Bush being elected president and taking office in the winter of 2001. I also remember 9/11 and the following invasion of Afghanistan. One thing that really stands out in my mind is the tale of a young woman soldier who was taken prisoner while serving in Iraq. After Jessica had been rescued, her story was told and we heard about her experience, how she had been mistreated while in captivity. The fact that she had been mistreated stuck fast in the mind of a child and I remember thinking gratefully that America would never treat someone in this manner-America does not torture! And perhaps at the time we did not, however, in the years since then things have changed, and I am sorry to say that I can no longer look at America and come to the same conclusion. Even if we were to close Guantanamo Bay, it could never undo the damage already done to those lives forever shattered physically and mentally by methods used by the Nazis and Japanese captors during ww2. And what of the destruction caused to the Constitution and Geneva Convention, the simple laws of justice? I ask you – where is our humanity!? Visit: 9/11 research.com!

Closing Gitmo, easy to campagain on. Obama if so, move them into Blair House!!

Comment by Linda

There’s a house in Chicago soon to be vacant (January 20th inaugeration day) with extra land around it — perhaps it would be a good place to house GITMO detainees.

Comment by Jeanne Gratehouse

Where on earth are these terrorists going to go????? No country wants them–they’re killers!!!!!We all know they will only go to wherever the killings of innocents are needed! These people have no conscience or love or reasoning in therir natures! They were bred and born to hate & kill!!!!!!! Our country is slowly being lead off “for the slaughter”, and we can thank the “politically correct” crowd for that!! And all the leaders and people just look the other way!!!!! May God have mercy on our souls for the callousness our world has become!
Are people not aware that 3 of the men already “let out ” of Gitmo have already been caught IN THE ACT of terrorism??? Wake up and smell the coffee!!!

Comment by DICK ROBEY

THE U.S. REP AND SENATOR WHO VOTE FOR CLOSING SHOULD AN EQUAL % OF THOSE TERRORISTS PLACE IN THEIR STATES AND FUNDED BY A NEW SALES TAXES.

THE USA WILL BE ATTACK BY MUSLINS AT LEAST ONCE BEFORE THIS MAN LEAVES OFFICE. HE IS A STAR IN HIS OWN EYES BUT IS NOT NOR WILL HE BE CAPABLE AS A LEADER. BUT HE WILL BE MY PRESIDENT AND I WILL PRAY SINCERELY FOR HIM; MORE THAN MOST OF HIS FAN CLUB; AS A CHRISTIAN I REALLY BELIEVE IN PRAYER. I TRULY WANT HIM TO BE SAFE BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY I WANT HIM TO GIVE US ANOTHER 7 YEARS OF SAFETY THROUGH A DEMONSTRATION OF HIS STRENGHT; NOT POLL POPULARITY.

Comment by Michael

All I can say is the obvious,. Most of the voters wanted change, and they are getting it. Whether or not it’s the kind of change they will agree with is now being seen, and will be in the coming months. Nobody really knows just what they got in Obama. I don’t think we will like it.

Comment by Joe L. Ogan

If we release the terrorists from GITMO, they will almost certainly atack us again with resultant loss of American Lives.

Comment by PJ

As far as Gitmo detainees are concerned the radical Islamist at Gitmo should have been secretly rung-out for information and then been done away with years ago. The American people don’t have the mental or emotional capacity to deal with the dark-side of war. War is war and culling the heard of humanity it isn’t a social event. Rarely do you hear please pass the Grey-Poupon and a box of small grenades.

The neophyte Marxian socialist who is controlled by the Chicago Political mob and who barely 50% of the voters elected to “Lead” the USA makes his very first action as President the release of sworn terrorist who want to kill the very people he is taking an oath to protect on the same day he takes the oath. Do you think he has an agenda?

Then again what would anyone expect from a self-defined intellectual elitist who has never stayed in one job long enough to ever be held responsibility for anything. The American people are not stupid but at least 50% of the voters are extremely gullible. Sadly, the new Marxist President with help from the cheerleading liberal press will likely win the day. So since we are stuck with the Press selected darling of Socialism, I suggest that the dumbest in Congress, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reed find a place in their home districts for these down trodden souls of Islamic fantasy.

Comment by Pat

I have to comment on the close Gitmo people. Your idealistic view of this is childlike you have no idea of what you are saying. These captives know exactly why they are in there and they depend on the ignorance you display to get out to terrorize another day.

Comment by Pat

If you want to know how we as a country have gotten so screwed up read the above comments of Retrogamer. It is this kind of ignorance that gets people like Obama elected

Comment by benjaminvallen1

He is out of his freaking mind. This people aren’t criminals: they are POWs. duh. so us holding German, Japanese, Italian or otherwise prisoners in WWII was wrong because we didn’t charge them with a crime? WOW.

So, Obama is out of his freaking mind. But we already knew that.

Comment by Owl Creek Observer

I say turn them all loose in California where nobody would notice.

On the other hand, they could all be appointed to congress, where they’re already in the majority.

Problem solved.

Comment by June

Not a good poll. You can vote as often as you like.

I personally find it discusting that a 2 year senator from “Chicago Politics” can completely change our national scecurity proceedures with a stroke of a pen.
I pray this is not a prelude to another attack on our soil.

Comment by Jo Ann Spivey

Why not build a HALFWAY house out side the WHITE HOUSE and put the prisoners there. Let one of them hurt one of Obama’s kids and see what happens. I don’t think we would have to worry about torture.

Comment by joyce

if they close gitmo………they should not be sent to this country…..they should go back to there own country and be jail for the same thing.
Or send them to an island out in the pacific…..where its no mans land……no one can say nothing. If these country dont want them back to put in jail.

Comment by james

send all the bank and auto people gitmo, let them use it for a resort.

Comment by Theresa

I think they should divide up the prisiners they release and send them to the Upper East End in Manhattan and Malibu Beach in CAlifornia where they will fit in with the rest of the Blame America First crowd. Theresa from Boise

Comment by Basscop

I bet most “yes” voters to close it, have never served in the armed services or ever had to fight for their own life. Maybe they should listen to someone has fought for his or her own life and ours at the same time. I know these liberal Hollywood people mean well, but when they never go to fight, they have a view that is not as well rounded as others who have paid the price. Gold Bless on soldiers.

Comment by Diana

I don’t understand any of these comments I’m reading about. To close Gitmo would be a disaster. To those that want it closed should remember that water boarding is not inhumane in my opinion because these people can stand and watch someone beheaded in the name of Allah and cheer about it. And you’re worried about water boarding. BULL…..They don’t fall under the Geneva Convention because this is not a declared war and no one was in “uniform”. Also…most of the detainees were picked up and transported from Afghanistan or Pakistan. Not Iraq. If they are released maybe each one of you will have an extra bedroom in your homes to house at least one.

yea lets just forget these are bad guys and the blood that was shed to put them there and 9-11 and the treatment our troops face to catch them again these people are not the type to say my bad you got me lets just be friends now weve seen the error of our ways the guy hasn’t even realy got started yet any thing he says he will do and does not will be blamed on the previous addministration any how .he wants to do such a thing so fast for the bad guys what about america and the treatment of citizens and our troops internet decapitations who is barock obama bin laden any way honestly where did this guy come from what did he use to do we are screewed .

Comment by Doug Warner

Sure, go ahead and close GITMO, put all those terrorists back on the battlefield. While you are at it, why not send a few billion to the terrorists too. Seems like the bad guys have all the breaks and all the rights when you ask the Democrats. I keep thinking back to the two magazine pictures, one with Obama dressed up in a robe and turbin and the other with his picture and the phrase, “I AM GOD.” He proves daily that his priorities do not include the American people, or for that matter, the American continent. My suggestion is that everyone buy thier guns now so they can protect themselves after the innauguration from all of the crooks and terrorists that Obama loves so much.
I can’t believe I served 28 years in the USAF, fought for my country, proudly and now have to see it turned over to someone like Obama who only wishes to turn it into a cesspool of debt, uneducated children, crime ridden streets, while he and his corporate friends (and the Clintons) get rich of us (and from all the money comong in to them from Dubai)
America is strong…we should be able to survive the next four years of Obama’s anti-military and anti American views. The bad thing is, it will be our tax dollars that Obama is throwing away while he asks us to work harder and sacrifice more. Thanks for nothing O-BUM-A

Comment by retrogamer500

I agree with closing Gitmo. People have been tortured there because it is technically not on U.S. soil, so the torturers can’t be prosecuted. Some people don’t care about terrorists getting tortured, but this is America, and everybody should be accountable for their actions.

Torture just isn’t right. You can torture anyone and get them to say anything. It only takes so much to break a man, even if they are innocent. I believe that even terrorists should have the same protection as everyone that the U.S. comes across. Most of the detainees haven’t been to a court trial for years, and I believe that everyone is innocent until proven guilty.

How does torturing prisoners save lives?

Comment by Guess

What amazes me, we never learn. We are two generations removed now from WWII, and one removed from Vietnam. We don’t remember what or how Americans behaved before, during and after WWII except for the period movies of the time. Vietnam was different, news everynight at 6 – soldiers being killed routinely. America called soldiers ‘baby killers’ and worse. Closing GITMO? I don’t really care if they do or don’t; perhaps it would be much better given the history that it is closed but the part that concerns me and should concern all of you instead of this @#$%@# rehortic being spewed is what do we do with them, where do we send them (who wants them)? War isn’t a country to country match where both sides play by the same rules – today it is about beliefs and multi-national individuals standing against soverign nations and WE have gotten fat, lazy, and complacent.

Comment by Jean Goncalves

Closing Gitmo would be a big mistake and very dangerous! Doesn’t Obama realize that these scum were captured on the battlefield killing our American military and innocent people?

They are not citizens and shouldn’t be tried in our courts – they have no civil rights. Sixty one that have been released have returned to terrorism activities.

Radical Islam makes no secret that their goal is world domination and these scum at Gitmo should all be executed – they have shown no mercy to our soldiers and contractors in Iraq.

By the way, why doesn’t Obama bring them to the White House to live with his family?

Comment by Mike

The people being illegally held at Gitmo are INNOCENT until proven guilty under the rule of law we supposedly cherish so dearly. Either charge them and try them legally, or let them go. These are men who have families and loved ones. Holding them illegally is sure to spawn more violent hatred against the U.S. Why cant we set an example for the world for justice and human rights instead of trying so hard to be the opposite of what we were supposed to stand for?

Comment by EZ2C

The people interned at Gitmo are prisoners of war and are entitled to protection of the Geneva Convention. They are not criminals and therefore are not entitled to the court system.

If Gitmo is closed they will have to be transfered to another location and this location should be called by the correct name, Prisoner of War Camp No 1.

Comment by kingswoodroad

They cut our heads off and chant, “Allah”, and we, in Gitmo, make sure they have only food sensitive to their religion and beliefs. They are allowed to pray five times a day. Do they have a Gitmo? Would they let us pray to God and be sure to get a copy of the Bible for us to read? Where will we put these detainees; these people that we took off the battlefield with no uniform, no insignias announcing their rank? To Hell with the Geneva Convention, who needs it?

Comment by BillAyton

To all you bleeding hearts that want a better life for those Arab animals, do you realize what their life would be like at San Quentin or Florence, Colorado or PelicanBay. They would pray to Allah to get back to Gitmo…believe me

Comment by Lynn

We NEED to keep threats to our country confined and investigated, interrogated. This is COMMON SENSE! And where would these terrorists go? This shows how weak Obama is when it comes to protecting our country! He is too mamby pamby obviously. What is he thinking here?
I bet he wants to sit and have tea with them and “discuss” their minds, beliefs, get to know them??
A big DUH here…. scary, we are worried about our country’s security now for sure. We don’t have confidence in Obama in this area At ALL..

Comment by Jim Cummings

If GITMO saved ONE American life it was worth it. The Muslim terrorists tortured TO DEATH our soldeirs and drug them through the streets. But, we didn’t do that. You fight fire with fire. But, BO will give that away too. Welcome to give away USA freedom by BO and The Democrat Liberal controlled Congress (since 2006). Maybe they’ll start a new rock band with the name.

Comment by Randy Quickly

I voted YES because NO is an ugly word.

Comment by Kim

Just like so many other campaign promises Mr. Obama made, this one may have a paper order but it it will takes months if not years to move all of these inmates who no one wants in their jurisdiction or country! Let’s hope he doesn’t just let these dangerous criminals go!

Comment by Ronald Reagan

I voted yes, as did most of you out there. If we must keep Gitmo going, to be fair and balanced, we should send Bush, Cheney, Rove and the rest of the gang as its residents. Remember, at Gitmo, a trial isn’t necessary. This would save us from the pain of putting this gang on trial.

Comment by eric

We should release them…otherwise we are just procrastinating when we demand the release of our soilders and citizens that are kidnapped or captured by Alkeida. If we want the kidnappings in the middle east to stop, then we must set an example for the Alcida, and not detain their soilders as well. Its an “eye for an eye” attitude these evildoers have…We’ll never stop the kid-nappings of citizens/soilders in the middle east if we mistreat their soilders like we have been doing

Comment by Fred

WOW!, 8 years of Bush bashing by the MSM, the Hollywood morons and reports from other left wing news organizations has really left it’s marks on many weak-minded Americans. Most of those goons being held at Gitmo were captured on the battlefield trying to kill our guys and gals in the military, POW’s aren’t given trials, they’re usually held until wars end. These jihadist dogs are not signee’s to any human rights protocols. They are not entitled to the Geneva Convention policies, nor, any other agreements made by rational governments. They give no quarter to prisoners when they capture them, and, deserve none when in custody. Nobody should waste their sympathy on the likes of them, these are the guys that hide behind women and kids while trying to kill anyone that doesn’t share in their extremist islam views. You are only entitled to get what your willing to give folks. You people that give more consideration to them than to your own people in our military, frankly, make me sick.

Comment by Marissa

You right-wingers are such fabulous spellers. I am shocked and amazed at the average IQ of you Bill O’ Reilly lovers. I am pretty sure that Barack closing Gitmo is not code for “Set all the prisoners free and let them run for governor of Texas.” So don’t worry right wingers, you can still hold on to that office! Gitmo is more a symbol of torture and misuse of power by America and the Bush administration than it it anything else. These prisoners are just going to another high security prison, whoop-de-doo! Same security, but with humane treatment, what a novel idea!

Comment by john doe

I don’t think they should close gitmo. the majority of the people there have been captured from the battlefield. The majority of those released went back to al-qaeda. Americans are really naive..! Sorry to hear that the majority of voters want gitmo closed.

Comment by Jack Hensley

If these “peace and love” lefties think there is no treats from these nuts in Gitmo each of them should be forced to take one home with them.

Maybe when they got their throats slit in their sleep the left wing might finally GET IT!

Our enemys do not know the words to “com by ya” not yet!

Comment by Helena Connolly

Are these prisoners going to be disbursed willy-nilly to disappear into the United States and cause more damage to the Country – I hope not…….they should get “HARD LABOR” for so many years and then be turfed back to wherever they came from originally and perhaps look after Usama Bin Laden for his remaining years….

Comment by Gitmo: Where we "get mo' " information

Look, everybody likes violence on both sides of the spectrum. Everybody likes to feel safe. Everybody likes to plunder whatever enemies they have. Obama may or may not save humanity or send us all straight to hell–we have no idea, yet. What we do know is that Guantanamo does not work, and it is just pissing everyone off that already either doesn’t like us, or that has shaky feelings toward us to begin with. If it worked, I wouldn’t care about the global disapproval–results are results, we’ll take them how we can at this point. The fact that it doesn’t work (and could be a potential cause of blowback) should be enough grounds to cancel the process. Either release the people who you have nothing on, or try them in court and imprison them here–hell, build a brand new prison made out of cesium if you want to facilitate a slow death. If they’re proven guilty, have at it.

Comment by BARBARA MAGRO

I SEE NO GOOD REASON TO CLOSE GITMO. THE PEOPLE ENCARCERATED THERE ARE WAR CRIMINALS. THEY WOULD SOONER SEE AMERICANS TORTURED AND DEAD AND THEY WOULD NOT THINK TWICE ABOUT IT. IT IS TIME FOR THE BLEEDING HEART LIBERALS TO GET THEIR HEADS OUT OF THE GROUND (OR ELSEWHERE) AND GROW A SPINE. AS FAR AS “WATER BOARDING”, I SEE NO REASON TO PAMPER THEM. THESE CRIMINALS WOULD USE ANY MEANS POSSIBLE TO DESTROY OUR NATION. I DO NOT NEED TO KNOW WHAT THE CIA OR ANY OTHER SECURITY ORG. IS DOING TO KEEP AMERICA AND AMERICANS SAFE. THAT IS THEIR JOB AND I EXPECT THEM TO DO IT TO THE BEST OF THEIR ABILITY. THEY SHOULD NOT BE HAMPERED BY CONGRESS OR THE LIBERAL LEFT.

The detention camp at Guantanamo Bay violates rights of habeas corpus and due process first set forth in the Magna Carta. Furthermore, the atrocious treatment of prisoners held captive there, has refused to apply the Geneva Conventions to prisoners of war from Afghanistan, and has misused the designation of “illegal combatant” to apply to criminal suspects on U.S. soil. Its very existence is one more stain on the human rights record of the U.S. For these reasons, it should be closed as soon as possible and its prisoners treated in accordance with due process and the U.N. International Declaration of Human Rights.

Comment by Jean

All of you people complaining about Gitmo have forgotten one thing. The fate of every single soldier the terrorist have gotten their hands on. They have been found dead, tortured and in some cases it has been hinted that they were beheaded. What Geneva Convention Rights did they get from the terrorists? Ask McCain what protection he got from the same rules while in the Hanoi Hilton. The answer is none and you want to complain about the treatment of people that would killl you in a heart beat. The press has been busy exagerating every little thing where the US military is concerned regarding the prisoners while hardly mentioning what has happened to the few of our soldiers those sick SOB’s have gotten their hands on. I cannot believe how gullible some of my fellow Americans are.

Comment by Sandy Bartlett

It seems it is a foregone conclusion that they are closing Gitmo and they are thinking about putting them in two places in my State. I say put them in Chicago they would fit very nicely there and understand they’re kind of politics. Actually, build them some houses right between the Aryes and the old Obama and his cronies house.

Comment by Sandy Bartlett

It seems its a foregone conclusion that Obama will close Gitmo. There is talk about sending the detainees to two possible areas in my State. I say they will fit very nicely in Chicago . SEND THEM THERE PREFERRABLY RIGHT BETWEEN THE AYRES AND THE OBAMAS OLD HOUSE.

Comment by RuleOfLaw

Here’s a crazy idea: let’s actually put them on trial or at least follow the Geneva Convention. Holding anyone indefinitely without trial or ignoring the Geneva Convention is not representative of the America I know.

Comment by Thomas Duvall

Please Read Washington Post article by Bob Woodward “Top Bush official Susan Crawford says detainee was tortured”. These people make me sick. He was left out in the cold Cuban air to freeze. This was torture according to her. Who cares in the first place? These guys were captured in combat against American Troops. There plans were to kill ALL AMERICANS. Do WHATEVER it takes to make them talk. Then I do not care what you do as long as they can never hurt anyone again.

Comment by Super Ultra Patriot w/ 2 Lapel pins

I love comments such as thanks for 7 and 1/2 years of safety President Bush. Was not Bush president for 8 years. Why do you give him a free ride for 9-11. If you hired a body guard and they allowed someone to kill one of your family members would you say “Thats ok there was no way you could have stopped that, just keep us safe from now on” so why do this for Bush. The R. behind his name must give him a free pass or two.

Counting down the hours until a true american will fill the Commander in Chief position on Tuesday.

Comment by Tom

Those of you who are defending the abhorrent pox known as Gitmo might remember the millions of American soldiers, all they way from the Revolution to WWII, who gave their lives in defense of American ideals. Chief among which is the concept of due process and a fail trial. Gitmo is an illegal concentration camp that we were too embarrassed to construct on the mainland wherein we hold citizens of other countries indefinitely and without charge. Furthermore, due to the confusion of war, it is very likely that a majority of those detailed were taken without reason. They may not have been extremists before we stole them away from their families and their homeland, but they certainly are after nearly a decade of illegal detention.

Thank you President Bush for keeping us safe on your watch… oh, except for 9/11.

Comment by RNC

Obama…worst mistake ever.

Riiiiight, because the past 8 years have been just amazing. Good call idiot.

Comment by Thinkclearly

It took 7 years after the first WTC attack for an attack on American soil. Please remember that. These large-scale attacks take several years to plan and execute. As a McCain backer I felt that the likelihood of an attack under Obama or McCain was much more likely during the 44th presidents term than during Bush 43’s. Just as It was argued Clinton didn’t do enough to halt groups like AL-Qaeda, it can be argued Bush did too much. Policies that protected us in the short term may have proven to unite the Muslim world and turn out more terrorists than before the attacks, and harm us in the long-term. Just remember the way the time cycle of these attacks work if god forbid it happens again.

THANK GOD for P Bush keeping us safe these last 7 years!!!! I mean think about it, we’re only in 2 wars that are costing a messily 80 billion dollars a month!!! WHAT A DEAL! And I don’t care about having any evidence or giving those terrorists at Gitmo a trial. THEY ARE TERRORISTS AND THEY SHOULD JUST BE EXECUTED TO KEEP OUR COUNTRY SAFE. I just hope those democrat commie scumbags don’t do anything to reverse the progress the Bush administration has made for our economy.

Comment by skizmo

Don’t close Gitmo. .. change the type of prisoners…. Bush and friends need a new home and Gitmo will do.

Comment by Greg

If you don’t like our President-elect, then you get get the hell out!

Comment by vk

Electing George W. Bush *turned* out to be the worst mistake the US has ever made.

Comment by Diane Hawkins

Closing down gitmo is a severe travesity! One, we need to find an alternate location for the detainee’s, and I cannot imagine a place more secure than Gitmo. Two, I doubt seriously there is a country on this planet that wants the detainee’s released to them. Three, if the detainee’s were tried by a court of US Law, and subsequently released into the USA none of us will be safe. I want to ask if anyone in the USA wants one of the detainee’s living next door to them? Think about the consequences here people!

Comment by Joe the thinker

Everybody thinks that the prisoners are just going to be released in the wild. NO they are not! Any idiot should realize that we must close Gitmo for the bad pr alone! Even if we stop the torture there nobody will believe it. The best course of action is to move the prisoners to another facility. And bringing the prisoners to the US is the last place they want to bring them. I agree this is a waste of money but I’m not sure of another way.

Even if Gitmo isn’t as bad as it is portrayed in the media, (torture, waterboarding, ect) we cannot afford to keep it open if we ever want to build more alliances in the international community.

Comment by mikelam

right or wrong, looks like an overwhelming majority of voters in this poll want gitmo to be closed

Comment by Ben Harrison

Thank you George W. Bush, for keeping us safe during your presidency – except for the 3,000 people that died on 9/11, and the 4,500 soldiers that have died since then in the war so far. Oh, and also except for our economy, and our international relations with other countries. Also, I guess you trampled on a lot of our liberties and freedoms in the name of fighting terror, so that’s not so good. Oh… also the kids. No Child Left Behind has been a complete failure, so I guess you’ve screwed our children and prevented them from getting quality childhood educations – that’s okay though because they’re now more likely to vote Republican. Congratulations President Bush! You truly will go down in the history books for all of the ways you’ve protected our great nation.

Comment by Jesse

The people being held at Gitmo are suspects, have not been accused or convicted of any crime. If you were wrongfully accused of being a terrorist, wouldn’t you want due process? Suspending human rights should never be an option no matter what the accusations are. Please do some research and think for yourself. Don’t let Fox think for you.

Comment by Bibby

THANK YOU GEORGE W BUSH FOR HELPING TO KEEP OUR COUNTRY SAFE. THE REST OF THE USERS WHO SAY THE PATRIOT ACT WAS BAD ARE JUST SAYING THIS BECAUSE OF THE TERRORISTS. ITS THE TERRORISTS WHO ARE ATTACKING THE IDEA OF THE PATRIOT ACT.

WITHOUT ACTS LIKE THAT THERE WOULD BE NO PATRIOTISM OR SECURITY IN OUR COUNTRY. PLEASE THINK ABOUT WHAT YOUR SAYING BEFORE YOU GET SKEPTICAL OF OUR GOVERNMENT.

THANKS FOR KEEPING US SAFE

Comment by Orsenfelt

How moronic are you people? It scares me that the Fox viewing public can be so ignorant about Gitmo.

Comment by James

Jeez, are all you commenters complete morons? Bush was a terrible president.

Comment by George Weele

Wow, you people are just insane, I LOVE IT! Deut. 2: 14, “and you shall know I am blah, blah, GEORGE BUSH!” It’s the end of the world oh noes!

Comment by Tim

None of the above commenters are even slightly deterred by the fact none of the prisoners of Guantanamo bay have mostly not been tried? Or been convicted? Do you think it’s right to be put into prison (and it’s a harsh prison) for being related to a terrorist? Knowing a terrorist?
If the people who are freed turn to terrorism it’s only because they didn’t precisely get to see the best side of the US now did they..

Comment by AndyD

It’s funny the way these people detained at Guantanamo Bay are constantly referred to as “terrorists” by commenters here.

If these people were proven to be terrorists, there would be supporting evidence and they would be tried and sentenced appropriately. Everyone who has supported Guantanamo for keeping them “safe”, “protected” and “free” from terrorists should consider how they would feel to be locked up without evidence, given no right to trial, and in some cases tortured.

Is this freedom? Is this liberty?

I’m not an extreme liberal, I believe there are some steps that need to be taken to combat potential terrorist threats, but locking people up indefinitely without evidence is certainly not one of them.

I vote close but not before they put the real criminals from the present administration and the no voters with such lame excuses from this article in there.

Comment by Joseph Plumber

Oh my god.
Reading through these comments I really think this country is doomed.

Stop watching faux news and start using that thing dangling in your heads, some may refer to it as brains.

Comment by Danny Keith James

Bush is a war criminal. Anyone with more than one functioning brain cell knows that. Fox viewers, on the other hand …

Comment by Rudigar

Gitmo should have never existed in the first place. Nothing but bad news has come out of it. It’s been a complete waste of time and money. Obama is on the right track, just give him trust and patience and you’ll start to see the world come together as one.

Comment by Ed

The detainees aren’t going to go into jails because in the US you need to be charged with a crime. Its called habeus corpus.

Comment by he-man

Wouldn’t a great start be to give everybody in there a fair trail? Innocent until proven guilty, like the free and democratic country the US is supposed to be. Like you and me would demand if we were captured by someone, foreign or not.

Before we have figured out which ones are guilty, speaking of execution seems kind of barbaric to me.

Comment by mclaren

The Jeffrey Dahmer wannabes who advocate keeping the torture chambers of Guantanamo Bay open need to emigrate to North Korea if they don’t like the constitution of the United States of America. Amendment 8, “Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.” — that’s the U.S. constitution, love it or leave it.

Comment by Alissa

OBAMA!
YES WE CAN!
YES WE DID!

(get over it, republicans. you’ve had your eight years, and you screwed up this country.)

Comment by rico

If Bush had done his job before 911 we wouldn’t have had all this gitmo nonsense to begin with. I get really put off by people saying Bush and the GOP kept us safe for 8 years. It isn’t true. Bush should have been impeached for 911 for dereliction of duty. He was on vacation for way too long prior, screwing around being stupid.

Comment by Eric

Most dangerous people in the world

Like bin-laden’s driver? Maybe he’s a really bad driver.

English and Australians in gitmo have been released.

The two australians were: David Hicks, he was just a slow dude who wanted to be a freedom fighter, now he’s a mental wreck. Mamdu Habib, who was just a family man in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Both were tortured in egypt under the supervision of australians and americans, now they’re under surveillance.

If they are really bad people, maybe they should get a real trial. Then we’ll all know exactly how dangerous they are.

Comment by lorddread

Close Gitmo and stop the illegal policies of this corrupt administration. After the soon to be ex-president’s trial for WAR CRIMES Gitmo may be the ideal location for the entire administration.

Comment by Dylan

I see many comments about Bush keeping Americans “safe”. I keep forgetting that 9/11 happened during some president’s term that wasn’t Bush.

Comment by joe

It is unbelievable to see so many misinformed people in one thread. I guess that is what happens when you get all of your info from one source. My guess this post is being deleted as I am typing it.
