Goodbye to Gitmo?

In a report released Monday afternoon by the Associated Press, two presidential transition team advisers say President-elect Barack Obama is preparing an executive order to close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Sources say the order could be issued as soon as Jan. 20, Obama’s first day in office.

The prison will most likely not close any time soon, however, as nearly 250 Al-Qaeda and Taliban suspects and potential witnesses still occupy the facility. Still, the order would begin action on finding alternate facilities for the jailed detainees.

What do you think? Take our poll below and/or comment to have your say!

Electing Obama will turn out to be the worst mistake this country has ever made.

Where will the 250 detainees be sent? How about to Chicago!

I’ve slept nights knowing we’ve had a President in office worrying about OUR safety and has kept us safe over the last 7 years! Thank You President Bush for loving your Country and it’s people .. and taking the heat that doesn’t belong to you!

Comment by Mel

I’m guessing that the terrorists are going to get a slap on the wrist and a ‘don’t do that again’ from Obama. What’s he going to do then? Send them home? He’s going to single handedly undo everything our military has done to keep us safe since 9/11/01. Hope you all are happy.

Comment by Salli C.;Senior

We have NEVER had any one escape from Gitmo, because it’s out in the ocean and Cuba is on the other side of ‘fence’. What are they thinking! Moving them would put many people, places in much jeopardy. I can only hope and pray that the main obstacle to this ridiculous idea will be that NO one or no place will accept these prisoners. I wonder if Obama will go down there first and look at the situation first hand before signing any Executive Order. He will then see that they have been treated as well as prisoners in USA; and given special consideration for their religious requests, and except for the lack of freedom, were given better treatment than these type of extremists give to THEIR prisoners. Thank you for listening.

Comment by PatT

What part of there are people in the world who hate us for our religion and not our politics do people not understand. No matter how “nice” Obama wants to play, until America converts to Islam like the radical muslims believe we must, we are the enemy. To release terrorists who confess they want to kill Americans scares the heck out of me. In fact, Obama scares the heck out of me!

Comment by Jim

It’s a mistake to close Gitmo because, with no place to put them, the taking of prisoners might be replaced by “take no prisoners”. And, I hope they were smart enough to put infiltrators in with those prisoners or have implanted bugs so that they can be secretly followed.

Comment by karen

I guess the terrorists will be sent to a prison where they can recruit more terrorists that can kill Americans.

It is treason – in time of war – to aid or abet enemy soldiers captured on the battle field killing American soldiers. The philosophy of Obama that justified his setting enemy soldiers free, is the philosophy of madness and blindness of heart as described in Deut. 28, if you obey the Words of the Lord, all the world shall be afraid of thee, you will be blest in your cities and field. But if you disobey the Words of this Book, you will be cursed in your cities and your fields’ with incurable diseases and with madness.
The curse of ‘madness’ is being delivered to the USA for we have abandoned the faith of our fathers. Our enemy within rules over us in our blindness and madness.
The message now is, “Save yourselves from this terminal generation.” Acts 2:37-42.

It is treason -in time of war- to aid and abet enemy soldiers, captured on the battle field killing American men. Madness and blindness of Deut 28: has happened to America. The message now is: “Save yourselves from this terminal generation.” Acts 2:37-42.
We will be “looking back at Barack Hussein Obama”.

YES!

Close Gitmo!

Comment by Ron

If Gitmo is closed, let’s make sure that the prisoners are housed in Illinois.

Comment by V. J.Cirbus

Close Gitmo and stop the illegal policies of this corrupt administration. After the soon to be ex-president’s trial for WAR CRIMES Gitmo may be the ideal location for the entire administration.

Comment by Pat

when he closes Gotmo where are the detainee going here to the US. Because thier countroes don’t want them or is he just going to let them go so they plan another attack

Comment by Genice Callaway

Barak Obama did not complete even one term as a US Senator. He is extremely under-qualified for the office of President of the US. George Bush did a good job of protecting America from terrorists, and I’m very concerned that the new President will not have the level of experience needed to protect this country. GITMO is an excellent place to retain the terrorist prisoners. I’m anxious to hear what BO’s alternative to the present setup will be. I will truly miss George W Bush!

Comment by John Thomas

It’s no big deal to close Gitmo. Obama will be able to sit down and talk with the terrorists. I’m certain he will understand the errors of the USA and convince them to be lenient on us. He could also appoint Bill Ayers as his Terrorist Czar. Who better to represent us than someone who has walked in their shoes!

Comment by Comment by Nancy in Dallas

Our fears are now a reality since the Dem’s were elected! If people were paying any attention to
the news since 911, we were attacked by these people and if anyone thinks, for a single minute, that they have changed their minds about wiping us off the map, you better reconsider those thoughts! With a Dem entering the White House, I have sure lost my sense for feeling secure. It is also sad that the world has been in denial as to the type of war we are fighting. It is a Biblical War and it started in the book of Genesis with Abraham and Sarah. For all those “Doubting Thomas”, read it for yourself!

Comment by mimi

what can I say…, thank you P. George Bush for my safety for my children. and God bless for our !!country, someday they plan another attack maybe 7years and 11 months and I hope not!!!

Comment by Joan Harris

I think Gitmo should be left open unless Mr. Obama
is going to send those criminals to some OTHER
country rather than the United States,
or execute them.

I would prefer execution.

What bothers me is that maybe he is going to send them to
his mother’s home state of Kansas – as a “pork barrell”
thing so they can expand a prison in Kansas
and spoil these criminals more than they are already spoiled.

Comment by E C Ewert

Just where do they think these people will be placed? Why are liberals so concerned about terrorists that want to kill all Americans regardless if we are conservative or liberal? Closing this facility would be a huge mistake.

Comment by J Lynn Autry

I think Mr. Obama is both mis-led and mis-informed. For this reason and others not related to Gitmo are why I could not support Mr. Obama. Only God can help us now and I’m not sure He’s up to it, but I’ll pray for him anyway. By the way, I’m referring our Christian God, not allah.

Comment by DeanO

In regards to comments by V. J.Cirbus … and exactly which “illegal policies” are you referring to? Can you name them and prove they’re illegal? Sounds like the same old montra… all words and no substance. Odd that the courts have consistently and repeatedly upheld the administrations stance. You’ve been watching to many movies… bet you don’t even know what a WAR CRIME is.

Comment by Trudy

And what he is planning to do with those people? Give them a pardon? If not, whose backyard is he moving them into? The red states?

Comment by mary

I SURE DON`T WANT THESE ANIMALS IN THE U.S. STATES, OH, MAYBE THE PEOPLE WHO WANT GITMO CLOSED WILL BE SO KIND AS TO HOUSE THEM IN THEIR HOME.

Comment by mary

THANK YOU GEORGE BUSH FOR KEEPING US ALL SAFE WHILE YOU WERE IN OFFICE, AND MAY GOD BLESS YOU.

Comment by Judi

Close Gitmo only if they take al the terrorists and put them near Obama, like DC so he and his family can watch them, or Illinois, but that would be too far away from him.
Since he likes them so much they should be close to him… I can’t believe how stupid this is. We are going to be in much trouble I have a feeling. Thank the Lord for President Bush for all these years of safe being.

Comment by Richard Poynor

You bet, why not be a friging idiot and let them go.
some day people are going to learn that these muslim radicals are truly out to kill us
thats it

heck almost every conflict in the WORLD are muslims trying to kill someone. Call it racial profiling or
bias but someday someone needs to stand up and tell it the way it is.
give me a holler I’ll do it

I hope Obama doesn’t let all of the terrorist go. They may be successful in blowing the U S off the map.
If they are sent to another country who will be responsible for making sure they don’t escape? This

Move the prisoners to the Presidio in San Francisco, or to NYCs Central Park. Place a four foot fence around the prisoners, with one unarmed low paid security guard.

Comment by Ernie

Drop each prisoner back into his home country from the rear door of a C130 at about 10,000 feet. Let it be Allah’s will if he survives.

Comment by Wick

The Naval Brig at NAS Jacksonville (if it still exists as it did in 1954) and is run as it was would be the perfect place for these prisoners, a couple of years there and a cave in Bora Bora with nothing to exist on would be a welcome place for them!

Comment by KATHY

What a bunch of crying loosers!!

Comment by Bald Eagle

They should stay there until this “War on Terror” is over. They are prisoners of that war and you don’t let prisoners of a war that you are in the middle of go and allow them to fight you again. It is all setup to handle those thugs, so why even transfer them someplace else. Is the ACLU trying to help these poor mistreated people, which I am sure they are. I know it is because of world opinion. We sure don’t want those people who sit on their butts and tell us how we should do things until they have to run for their lives and yell for us to save them, to be upset with the way we handle things.

Comment by John P. Donovan

Barack still has a year to change his mind since they estimate that much time is needed to resolve all questions. My odds are two to one that Gitmo will still have prisoners four years from now. I suggest that they relocate most of the prisoners to halfway houses in Washington, DC. Preferably either in Georgetown or close to the Capitol area.

Comment by Jane Vineyard

Closing a prison no way to punish the guilty. Prisoners are behind bars because they broke the law. We are insane as a nation and we are gonna pay the price for bad choices, mistakes and unworthy leaders. Our nation will never overcome the perils we face until we return to the God of the Bible and govern by His Word.

Comment by KEVIN

If the terrorists are released, they should be released to Illinois to begin to groom the next generation of Chicago politicians.

Comment by Skipper

I have a feeling that BO won the election much as Al Franken is now claining to have won. This business with Gitmo is just one of the many mis-steps that he is blundering into. There are many things that have come up in just the past 2 weeks that are really frightening, however unfortunately many of us warned about it for much of last year. Tighten your seatbelts we are in for a very rough ride! I am from Indiana who has not gone Democrat for so many years I cannot remember. BO won the state and yet I know of no one with the exception of 2 or 3 who voted for him. Acorn was caught in Hammond and Indianapolis but never found that anything was really done about it???

Comment by KEVIN

Let them out and let Ted Kennedy drive them home…

Comment by Jerrie Williams

I did not vote for him however I was praying that he would do what is right for this country, NOT!
Let’s see, maybe we could send them to live with him in the White House and they can join Rev. Wright’s church and take over his vacant Senate seat. He just does not not get , those people are not just doing time for a crime they commited, they hate us and want us dead. They should never be let out and ,oh for the sake if all Ameicans, do not being them to this country.

if they close gitmo, i have an excellent idea of where to put them. hollywood. that’s a no brainer. most of them are sympathetic to them anyway. they have huge houses. they already have lots of their own security & they have lots of money to support them. if there is overflow, the rest can go to d.c. or chicago. see, i solved that little problem just like that!!!!

Play with fire… get burned. I will resent the inevitable, deeply.

Comment by Bill Mesler

I voted yes to closing Gitmo even tho I was only in the 6% I think it unconcientable to hold those prisoners without trial. They should all be released immediatly!! IN CHCAGO!

Comment by Mickey McPoland

Declare world war on militant extremists wherever they are. Detainees should then be treated as prisoners of war. Therefore, they will not be tried as war criminals, but held until the end of the war. Then, they will be returned to their country of origin. Or, put them out to sea in rubber rafts…NOW….
Just kidding. No trial is needed to hold POWs.

Comment by maggieb

Wow what does he want to do, let them go so they can attack us again? I agree let them loose in Chicago or Hollywood and let them raise havoc in Obama’s neighborhoods.
Another 9/11 will surely happen Again,

I can sum it up in one word, MISTAKE!

Comment by Dale Evans

Just wait until they get transfered into a real prison without all of the accomdations that they get now.

I can hear the ACLU and Human Rights Watch screaming that they are being treated like common prisoners.

At any rate it will be hard to do because of NIMBY and Obama knows it.

Comment by Arlinda DeAngelis

Take these 250 murderers and send them to that special little enclave in Illinois where the country hating reverend Wright and Farakhan and terrorist Ayers and money launderer Roszko and the man who cannot produce a birth certificate live. They have nice big houses and these killers will get along swell with Wright and Farakhan … they can share the hate. They can share terrorist techniques with Ayers. Maybe he can show them how to blow up the Pentagon from the ground. Rozsko can show them how to launder their money and any two bit dictators money. Last but not least Obama can show them how to get into the Oval Office without any documentation.

Comment by Beth Mallow

What happens when this country is attacked again and it is discovered that one of the terrorists is one that was released from Gitmo? Who will be held responsible? I agree with Sue that we should send them to Hollywood. Sean Penn’s house should be the starting point and then farm them out from there. Barney Frank, Nancy Peloise, Chris Dodd & Harry Reid are other good places to put them. Because we have held them for so long the wonderful elected memebers of Congress the Senate will think that we need to give them some going away money so everyone digg deep into your pockets for somemore BAIL OUT MONEY. Since they only ones they won’t give the bail out money to is the American people let’s just give it to the Terrorist that hate us. That would be how the tax and spend people that we keep putting in office will think. I did not realize my pockets were that deep.

Comment by David

No reason to close it as the inmates have to be housed somewhere. Why incur an unnecessary expense when we already own our taxpayer trillions. Get real!!

Comment by Sandra in West Virginia

Our money’s already gone – why not our national security, as well. I’m so tired of hearing about the “civil rights” of rabid extremists who live only for their rewards in heaven. Too bad the biggest rewards, according to them, are earned by the slaughter of other human beings.
And these are the “folks” for whom we labor to grant all the rights and privileges and guarantees of American citizenship.
Who forgot, along the way, that you aren’t entitled to civil rights if you’re not a CIVILIAN? The release of these murderers into our population will only benefit the ambulance-chasing attorneys, to the expense and derision and risk of the REAL citizens of this country.

Comment by TomPJr

I don’t believe President elect Obama really understands how much of a danger these fanatics are. I have never heard of trying prisoners of war in a civilian court with all the rights and privileges afforded a citizen of this country. These POW should be tried by a military court set up specifically for the purpose of trying the terrorists. It appears to me that many liberals do not take the war on terror seriously. In their blind hatred for President Bush, a result of the false information campaign, they blame him for using war on terror as a scare tactic to do all these so called violations of the constitution.

Thank you President Bush for doing what is right in the face of what I see as the biggest negative propaganda campaign ever waged against a president just so the liberals could get control of the government again. Sadly it worked and the American people are going to pay a high price for it.

Comment by John Rodda

Closing this facility would be an insult to our fighting men. Do we want these terrorist free to kill us and our soldiers. Why anyone in their right mind consider letting this happen? Having them confined to Chicago might be a good idea. We have spent enought time feeding and coddling these killers, so only if you send them out to sea in a leaky raft would I agree with Obama. Thank God for George Bush who kept them where they belonged.

Comment by Bob

If we have to close down Gitmo, Maybe we should release them at the North Pole!

Comment by T. Harrison

Integrating the Gitmo terrorists with our prison population will just allow them to recruit more terrorists.

Comment by David Dorsey

As an American and a WWII Navy veteran, I am deeply distressed by the direction BHO and the Dems are taking us. I have seen Presidents come and go and this Nation survived. For the first time in my life I am afraid for the survival of the US. I can only pray that God will save us .. He is our only hope.

Comment by christinaohio

IMHO closing Gitmo while the war is still going is would’ve been like releasing all of our POW’s in WWII. It is really a dumb idea and God save us from this lunatic ideology. Being nicer to Islmofacists is not going to make them want to kill us any less. The Propaganda that the media and the left has put out over the past 2 years borders on criminal and unfortunately when the policies fail as they will innocent American’s will pay with their lives just as they did on 9/11.

Comment by jasontromm

I say close Gitmo, as long as there is a liberal celebrity who will take in each terrorist. They should be willing to provide them shelter, food and clothing at no cost to the former detainees.

Comment by T.Harrison

Integrating the terrorists from Gitmo with the general jail population will just allow them to recruit more forces.

Comment by JS from OK

Did Obama et.al. ask the detainees how they feel about this? Our government is much more likely to be concerned about criminals and terrorists and illegals than they are those of us who abide by laws and pay our bills on time.
Most of our guests at Gitmo never had 3 sqare meals and a mattress before. Their own countries will execute them if we send them back there, or if they accept them they can go back to the caves they came from… until that next opportunity to blow themselves up.
We need to at least promise to shoot them with pork-soaked bullets or bury them with pigs’ blood if they try anything else, so they can’t get through those pearly gates to retrieve their virgins.

Comment by Ray Smith

Gitmo should not be closed. Very few understand the wars of the near future will be against terrorism, not counties except for a small few(Iran) It is a different kind of war, and our enemies have no rules. We cannot survive if we do not meet our enemies on the same level. If it takeds torture, both p[hysical and mental, so be it. Israel is in a very fight for its life against Islam.
The USA is in the same fight, but we do not want to admit it. Radical Islam is invading our culture
from the top down, and our lazy citizens, who want to survive on government handouts, are going along with it. Remember the slave traders who sold slaves to tghe world from Africa, were
Muslim. Our ciitizens are allowing us to become slaves to the Muslims again. We must stop Islamic Terrorism by any means possible. We need to take a lesson from Jack Bauer!

Comment by Betty Milligan

Someone needs to tell Obama what people really think and feel about closing Gitmo. Letting these people loose it just asking for another 9/11 if it isn’t already in the work.

Comment by Pat E

Closing Gitmo is all part of Obama’s plan to leave us unprotected. I pray when the plane or missle lands on the school his children goes to, he will then make a call to the only man that truly knew what being Commander in Chief really means…..The terrorists want to kill us! We now have a leader who doesn’t quite get that. Closing Gitmo is only the beginning……

Comment by Ray Smith

Keep Gitmo open: Terrorists should be executed as other countries do to people who they do not like.
I think Jack Bauer should be made head man in charge of our military and homeland security. Let him run it as he feels will produce results.
Our Politicians and OBama are giving our country away to Islam

Comment by XSF

Had Jimmy Carter (the biggest traitor in American history) not let the Ayatollah back into Iran, we would not have had the problems inthe ME we have now. If Bill (keep it in your pants) Clinton had not allowed Bin Laden to “travel at will” we wouldn’t have the problems in the ME we have today. Now Nobama is going to “talk” to the nice Iranians, close GITMO, open a dialogue with Hezbollah, HAMAS and any other Arab terrorist nation that has supported his campaign. Sad day for America, Democracy, Israel, Patriots and defenders of our country and our most valuable asset, the men and women of the US armed Forces.

Comment by Jan Ball

Now that BO has had been attending the daily briefings and has gotten a bird’s eye view of what is really happening he will change his mind on a lot if issues, especially GITMO. He may say he will close it to appease ACLU and the other radicals that helped elect him but he will procrastinate and say “as I have said from the beginning”. His most used phrase.

Thank you President Bush for keeping us safe since 911. All the kooks that hate you will soon be wishing you were back in office to wage this war against radical islam. BO won’t do it and neither will the dems in congress. I expect another major attack within the next 6 months, after BO dismantles the safe guards put in place by President Bush and VP Cheney.

We should pray that God puts a hedge around the USA because the BO administration won’t.

Comment by A Chicago gal once

I think Mr.Obama means well and is trying hard to appease all. However, don’t forget this is “pay back time.” The liberal left showered him with funds to win the election and now it is time to placate them. Perhaps George Soros would have room for them in his large home. I think Mr. Obama’s home could house them in Kenwood. It sure looks big enough.

I watched the press conference with President Bush yesterday. Very interesting and cival but I noticed that none of the reporters were anxious or willing to say thank you, President Bush, for keeping us safe these past 8 years. Perhaps it isn’t politically correct to be thankful for entitlements. What will the next 4 years bring?

Comment by Turtlelady

I voted “NO”, however if they are let loose I think they should be sent to Pelosi’s neighborhood or there should be a vacant house (OB’s) in Chicago where they would feel right at home.

Comment by Sam Goodlet

I say close it once the war on terror is over, until that time we have no choice but to keep an internment in place. What is the difference if they are confined at Gitmo or any other isolated off shore site? I recommend sending them to that island the French used for their prisoners some time back, I understand it may be available and no guards may be required, only food drops once or twice a year.

Comment by Thain Dikkers

They should send all 250 detainees back to their country of origin. They should never be allowed to enter this country.

Comment by Dorothy Kettle

I think these ‘prisoners’ will be much worse off anywhere else. Gitmo has probably felt like a country club for most of them. There is no way to please the whining extreme left! They’d whine if you hung them with a new rope!

Comment by Bill Windsor

All of the prisoners/terrorists should be housed in Washington, D.C. in a facility to be paid for by the
DNC. Streisand can be their House Mother.

Comment by Jim Mock

Closing Gitmo is just the very first stage of weakening our defenses and resolve as far as terrorists are concerned. This is a victory for Al Queda.

Comment by Hugh from Placentia, CA

President-Elect Obama’s campaign promise, now to be one of his first official acts as President, is a major mistake. Although the closure of Guantanamo Bay can’t be done immediately, there will be about 250 very dangerous inmates sprinkled into our own prison system. These radicals will infect our prison population, and we will probably rue the day Obama committed to close the perfect place to keep these enemies of our country away from our shores. Time will tell, and that’s the best argument against Obama’s pledge. Keep these dangerous men away from America and our interests!

This decision clearly shows lack of experience and world knowledge in closing Gitmo – where in the world and I mean that literally, will these killers go – nobody wants them and they will be back to try to blow us up. Surely, somebody in obama’s organizagtion is smart enough to know this – if I can figure it out, surely they can.

These people should have been terminated immediately instead of living off the United States for several years. They are heathens and want to die, so we should help them with their cause.

I think this is another example of Obama promising actions without even thinking about the unintnded consequences. Our country is in real trouble!

Comment by PJ

if Obama closes Gitmo, will he house them at his mansion?

Obama should know better and this should not even be entertained. Obama is already starting off on the wrong foot. If he closes Gitmo, then he best step down, as we will need a President who can think and make wiser decisions.

Comment by Lexy

The prisoners at Gitmo are not POW’s according to the Geneva Convention definition of POW’s. Lets try them in the military court, carry out whatever each sentence is and KEEP GITMO for any future illegal combatants,

Comment by Brenda

And you wondered why we thought Obama wasn’t experienced enough to be President???? Maybe they can ask for some of the bailout money since they probably feel they “deserve” it and Obama can raise our taxes to give to them for payback. Then some can move in with the Hollywood libs, some to Chicago, with Oprah and maybe Obama can give them all jobs that he he is going o create.

Comment by Brenda

Thank you President Bush for 7-1/2 years of safety. I am not sure where we are headed now but the Gitmo terrorist probably do!

Comment by Edward Koziol

When we close Gitmo all democrats along with Obama should take one of these pillars of the world home and introduce them to their families or let the NY Times house them,Krugman and Risch could adopt these warriors who killed American soldiers.

Comment by Don Kearney

How long will it take for the American public to wake-up? I am that afraid Gitmo is only the start of bad decisions to come from this new administration. But then again, the people that elected him wanted change.

Comment by Sam W. Keenon

It is very difficult to fight a “Politically Correct War”, particularly if you want to win. Too many high ranking politicians in the USA do not want to win and that, in my opinion, is treason. Congress decides to send our troops into harms way. Having done that, congress should back off and let the military fight the war. They are trained to win and to want to win. If the military needs Gitmo, then Gitmo sould be available to them.

Our newly elected president says in so many words, in his book, that if push comes to shove he will side with the Muslims. If that doesn’t scare you you have ice water for blood.

Comment by Ed Kokidko

If we cannot send the detainees to other countries which will certainly tourtue them then we must keep open Gitmo. It is a fact most of the detainees released have returned to the battlefield to kill again. My son will soon be deploying on his 5th combat tour and I do not want the liberals to release these terrorist anymore. The terrorist are POW’s for combat action against americans. They should not qualify for process through the court system which will only release them. Let the Red Cross and other agencies monitor our treatment of them from Gitmo and leave them there as POW’s.

Comment by Charles R. Dickerson

Well if the new President decides to close GITMO, hope that he has another “change” in mind to lock them up somewhere else. Maybe just bring them to Florida and turn them loose?? How about we take them to Chicago or Illinois in general and just turn them loose with the rest of the crooks?? Maybe they could get in line for a job with the new administration.

Comment by Karen

This is one of many “blunders” that I have heard about Obama’s choices. Where in the world would we put these very dangerout people? Not in my back yard!

Comment by Ron Giese

To close Gitmo is pure unadulterated lunacy! Enemy combatants that are dedicated to harm Americans need to be kept close at hand and as combatants not in uniform deserve to be imprisoned until the terrorist conflict is resolve and if that is years so be it. With the ignorance that abounds in the American legal community it would be a nightmare for my family to have to live through trials on U.S soil for these terrorists. Can you imagine the fodder for the liberal left press ugh!

If Obama closes Gitmo………………………………….the terrorists should stay at the White House with Obama and Family……………………………………going on weekends to ‘bunk in’ with Biden or Hillary and Bubba!!! We’ll see how fast they can re-open Gitmo!!!

Comment by Dan Melton

Since “O”bie wants to relocate all the terrorists at Gitmo, we can move Congress and the various alphabet agencies down there.

Comment by GoldTmmys

If Obama closes Gitmo…………………………….let the terrorists move into the White House with Obama and family! And maybe on weekends, they can take turns bunking with Biden and Hillary!!!!!
Does Obama really understand the situation???

Comment by Lori

Why in Heaven’s name would anyone do that but to want to kill the United States!

No one else wants them; they are killers, they were trying to kill our soldiers.

Are lawyers that hard up that they would risk citizens lives in order to have a terrorist case?

Maybe we should bring Treason trials back.

Well this shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone after all it was one of those campaign Promises Mr. Obama Made.
You Remember it is a time for A CHANGE We Can Believe in!!!

Well this will be a change and you got 8 years of this stuff comming so sit back and laugh as the Greatest society in the History of the World goes to Hell.
Funny Obama wants Gitmo Closed but no Country wants the people it houses. Maybe we can send them to Gaza and Hammas will take them and we can let the Isralies handle them they are the only who will stand up aganist the Loonies of the World.
I personally hope they send them to California with all the rest of the Liberals or maybe let them live next to the Dixie Chicks.
I am just glad I am old and about ready to Go meet my Maker, God help this country, but I doubt it is worth saving as it has gone to Hell.

Let’s take all the Gitmo prisoners and divide them equally betweem SanFrancisco,Chicago and Madison Wis. The prisoners will have friends in high places there who wish to get to know them better so they may coddle them appropriately and make sure they feel good about themselves and become HS Guidance Counselors and Tech Ed teachers and further equip the Prisonersso they can be more effective terrorists. I am scared. It is a real test to walk by Faith and not by sight. Really need to know how to rely on God and His ministering angels. Does God like to be tested? The Word is full of good kings and bad kings and the people suffer for it.

Is his oath for taking his office going to omit protecting the United States of America?

Those beasts are killers. I think there is a reason that site was chosen. I doubt they swim; harder to break them out and help with their terrorist cause, to name a couple.

Didn’t they let some killers out and found them right back out there killing our guys again?

Are attorneys that hard up and vain they’ll risk the USA for a terrorist trial?

Do we need to require a test before taking office of the Presidency for sanity?

Time to arm ourselves and get bomb shelters and chemical outfits, oxygen masks?

What do I pay taxes for if not for protection? Certainly not to keep someone on the couch or make
some attorney and judge have a show.

Comment by Heavy Hitter

WOW!!! What a great way for BO to begin by bowing to the terrorists at GITMO!!! The GITO crew should be sent to 3 places who love them and would welcome them—-Chicago, SanFrancisco and
Madison ,Wis.The good Liberals in these three places will see to it that the Terrorists will be placed in schools ,Public Office and Police Depts where they could do the most damage to the country.

The people who are determined to close the prison at “GITMO” have no idea what they are demanding.
Those prisoners are like WILD ANIMALS, and are determined to maim, rape and kill anyone who is NOT Muslim, and THEIR FORM of Muslim, too.

Comment by Harold Parrish

These type of prisioners use worse methods of torture on our people than water boarding. They even cut throats and kill people. Water boarding should not be considered as torture. Where will these people go if they are turned loose? We do not need them in the states.

That would be a huge mistake to close Gitmo…………. And for the gentleman that said to send the inmates to the North Pole…. We don’t need them here in Alaska either.

As an interested observer from Australia I find many of these comments deeply disturbing. To any of you who support the rule of law and the principles espoused by the United States constitution, these prisoners MUST be given a just trial, if they truly are guilty as many of you are suggesting then no harm, no foul. But if a SINGLE innocent has been swept up in these brutal proceedings then an immense miscarriage of justice has occurred.

Though in Australia we don’t have a bill of right and constitution allowing us the liberties and freedoms you possess in the United States, much of our culture shows strong influence from your country. We admire the rule of law – when it occurs, please don’t spit on your constitution seeking vengeance for the abhorrent acts of some few lunatics.

If these people are prisoners of war, then they should be afforded rights granted to them by the Geneva convention, if not, then they should be treated as any other prisoner. Torture and brutality are NOT the principles the writers of the constitution would have found inspiring. Do not let despicable acts by the enemies of your country drag you further down to their level.

Please take this comment in the spirit it was intended, I admire much about your country, but your recent xenophobia and belligerence is tainting your hard-won reputation the world over. Like all of you I was deeply shocked and enraged by 911, but your attackers are dead.

Close Gitmo and prosecute Bush and Cheney for war crimes.

Comment by Michael

Either charge the prisoners with a crime, or let them go. The whole concept of holding people forever without charging them is disgusting. It’s something that would make Hitler proud. This is a policy that will do us far more harm than good in the long-term.

I don’t know why I’m even bothering to comment here. Most of the people here are looking at this too emotionally to understand reason, and at least half of these people are religious nuts. Some of their comments are downright scary.

Comment by Charlie

It makes sense. After all Obama is obviously working with both the terrorists and the martians. Praise Jesus.

Comment by Ryan

If you want to get technical about it, since Congress never declared any war they can’t be POWs in the technical sense and held as such. They’re in legal limbo with neither the Constitution or international treaties applying to them. Furthermore, they’re already planning on moving them to Leavenworth, KS (my backyard) after all of this supposedly goes into effect (please stop being ignorant and assuming Obama will release them for pete’s sake).

The installation is actually more secure than Gitmo and at least the monies going to their detention will be staying here in the US. I don’t know what exactly we do send into Cuba (electric, food, water, etc.) with regards to monies spent but any little bit we can retain locally will help us in this downturn.

More troops home with their families and suspects in a more secure location along with less money being spent I feel is a win on all sides.

Comment by True American

All you jesus freak bush lovers need to wake up and realize that illegally imprisoning people without a trial is very un-American, and very unconstitutional. You may feel safe praying to your false god every night and wallowing in Bush’s awesomeness, but that would come to an end if you had to face reality if someone you loved was imprisoned indefinitely because of their name or the color of their skin. It’s disgusting to hear so called “Americans” say that Bush has kept us safe while we attack Iraq after a bunch of Saudi’s attacked us. Who came up with that great idea? Oh well, only 4,000 American lives or so, as long as we keep praying right?

To all of you who see this as a bad choice: Research a little about Guantanamo Bay and see for yourself why Obama feels that it needs to be closed down.

Comment by Mark

The terrorist will be moving in now, that is what we get for electing a brown guy. I just don’t understand why we don’t just start nuking all the brown colored people out there. Its ridiculous to talk to them. If you don’t like how our country is ran we are going to bomb your country, so STFU!

Comment by Mike

The problem with is that Habeas Corpus that people are being held in Guantanamo Bay without being charged with a crime, without having a trial.

People have said that the people being held at Guantanamo are killers. Then, let them be tried as killers. Everyone who thinks this is a “bad idea” for the World as a whole apparently doesn’t understand that the European Union has been pressuring the US to close, or restructure Guantanamo Bay for a few years.

I agree, this is making America look weak, but i would hate it if some England for example mistakes me for a terrorist because i have a beard and never lets me out, or ever gives me a reason why I am there.

Everyone is innocent until proven guilty. But people are kept at Gitmo without trail or evidence. If they were on American soil, they would have to be judged in a court of law. That’s America. That’s how we do things in the Red White and Blue.

People who speak or want otherwise should pack their bags. We need the strong to stand up to the wicked. Not some people who prefer to jail the world to save themselves.

Obama’s a jerk.

Comment by 12Gauge

I see Gitmo as a necessary evil. There are really evil people in the world and many that wish to do every American the most harm they can including death. Short of killing these evil people, we need a place to put them that they can’t harm us. Gitmo not only is a good place for them, it’s not likely that they would ever try to escape because Castro’s Army that surrounds Gitmo would treat them far more harshly than any of our soldiers would.

Too many touchy-feely people in this country think the world is just exactly like the Disneyland or Disneyworld exhibit, It’s A Small World, when in fact, it is a very dangerous place. Most of these folks, Hollyweird types included, wouldn’t know how to exist off the tourist paths in any country they go to.

Some places will kill you simply because you are a stranger….nothing more…………

Not a single one of those prisoners has received a trial- they’ve just been accused and then imprisoned for YEARS (and, of course, tortured). Everyone here seems to have forgotten that whole “innocent until proven guilty” concept that we use here in the US. Just because someone has been accused of being a terrorist DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE TERRORISTS. It has to be PROVEN.

Otherwise, we’re no better than the people we’re fighting. I’m ashamed of everyone here who can’t see that. You don’t have the right to call yourselves “American”.

Hilarious. What a meaningless act. It’s closed, but not really closed. Feel better now? Come on. This guy takes his followers for real morons. He faces the same situation Bush did. He’d like to close it, but can’t b/c the countries where these people are from won’t take them, and they’re too dangerous (generally speaking) to just let go (e.g., 61 recently released GITMO inmates involved in terrorist activities since being released).

Whatever happened with innocent until proven guilty? NONE of these prisoners have ever been charged with a crime. What makes you think ANY of them are terrorists? Take two minutes to think about how you’d like to be treated if you were accused of a crime you didn’t commit. Then think about how they are being held indefinitely without even being accused of any crimes. It’s a sad state of affairs and part of the reason most of the world hates America.

What are you all thinking? Many of the people kept at Gitmo aren’t proven terrorists, but there is “suspicion of possible terrorist leanings.” Also, what is done in Gitmo is different than a normal prison, unless you think torture is now an ok thing.

Great logic, Saudis attack us on 9/11, and people on this site get upset that Iraqis are going to go free. Thank God we have an intelligent person about to take charge of this country and bring us back to a point (economically, militarily, and morally) that we deserve. The minority of this country that thinks we should abandon the Constitution are out of power, and we have a leader that won’t allow planes to hit buildings. Thanks for paying attention to terrorism far too late, W. May God have mercy on your soul when the time comes.

The ignorance on parade here is astounding – these people are not criminals, they cannot have broken any laws of the united states because they were not in the united states. Many of them were not captured by our armed forces in combat as many believe, they were purchased from local warlords under the assurance that they were “bad people” and “knew something”. The majority of them are being held with zero evidence that they are actually terrorists, have had no charges pressed against them, and – contrary to all the “country club” comments seen above – they have been tortured for the majority of their time in Gitmo. Despite the assurances of corrupt functionaries in our government, waterboarding, stress positions, sleep deprivation, and sensory overload for extended periods of time do constitute torture. If you don’t think so, feel free to volunteer to let someone subject you to that kind of treatment for a week – I dare you. Our own pentagon officials have stated that should the courts find them innocent, they have no intention of releasing them. Way to show the world those freedoms that the supposed terrorists hate us for – we’ll keep you in jail even if you’re found innocent.

People are babbling that these people attacked us already on 9/11. The problem with that argument is that none of the 9/11 terrorists had any connection to Iraq. And much like the red scare of the 50’s, the only evidence of many of these people being terrorists is that we called them that name.

Comment by Sam

I am astounded by the comments saying we are pampering detainees in Guantanamo Bay. Do any of you have even an inkling of what really goes on there? There are people who have not even been charged with any crimes, not terrorists who soldiers caught, but people who we suspect of having ties to terrorism, but against whom we do not have evidence to press charges. They are not being pampered, many of them are being tortured, although according to the Bush administration water-boarding is not considered torture. Do some research on the psychological effects of water-boarding and then realize we are doing this to people who have not even been arrested for a crime. Almost all experts on interrogation agree that torture leads to false confessionals, not actual information. There are interrogation methods that consist of simply talking to the suspects and using psychology to gain information that actually works. There is evidence now that the confession from the “mastermind” of the attacks on September, 11 was completely false. You cannot morally and arguably legally detain persons indefinitely without pressing charges, and torture is always unacceptable no matter the circumstances. Nothing is worth sacrificing our humanity for by torturing possibly innocent, or even guilty people. Guantanamo Bay is a festering sore on the countenance of this nation and I hope for our own moral conscience that it ceases operations as soon as possible.

Most dangerous people in the world

Like bin-laden’s driver? Maybe he’s a really bad driver.

English and Australians in gitmo have been released.

The two australians were: David Hicks, he was just a slow dude who wanted to be a freedom fighter, now he’s a mental wreck. Mamdu Habib, who was just a family man in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Both were tortured in egypt under the supervision of australians and americans, now they’re under surveillance.

If they are really bad people, maybe they should get a real trial. Then we’ll all know exactly how dangerous they are.

The Jeffrey Dahmer wannabes who advocate keeping the torture chambers of Guantanamo Bay open need to emigrate to North Korea if they don’t like the constitution of the United States of America. Amendment 8, “Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.” — that’s the U.S. constitution, love it or leave it.

Wouldn’t a great start be to give everybody in there a fair trail? Innocent until proven guilty, like the free and democratic country the US is supposed to be. Like you and me would demand if we were captured by someone, foreign or not.

Before we have figured out which ones are guilty, speaking of execution seems kind of barbaric to me.

Comment by AndyD

It’s funny the way these people detained at Guantanamo Bay are constantly referred to as “terrorists” by commenters here.

If these people were proven to be terrorists, there would be supporting evidence and they would be tried and sentenced appropriately. Everyone who has supported Guantanamo for keeping them “safe”, “protected” and “free” from terrorists should consider how they would feel to be locked up without evidence, given no right to trial, and in some cases tortured.

Is this freedom? Is this liberty?

I’m not an extreme liberal, I believe there are some steps that need to be taken to combat potential terrorist threats, but locking people up indefinitely without evidence is certainly not one of them.

Comment by Tim

None of the above commenters are even slightly deterred by the fact none of the prisoners of Guantanamo bay have mostly not been tried? Or been convicted? Do you think it’s right to be put into prison (and it’s a harsh prison) for being related to a terrorist? Knowing a terrorist?
If the people who are freed turn to terrorism it’s only because they didn’t precisely get to see the best side of the US now did they..

The people being held at Gitmo are suspects, have not been accused or convicted of any crime. If you were wrongfully accused of being a terrorist, wouldn’t you want due process? Suspending human rights should never be an option no matter what the accusations are. Please do some research and think for yourself. Don’t let Fox think for you.

Thank you George W. Bush, for keeping us safe during your presidency – except for the 3,000 people that died on 9/11, and the 4,500 soldiers that have died since then in the war so far. Oh, and also except for our economy, and our international relations with other countries. Also, I guess you trampled on a lot of our liberties and freedoms in the name of fighting terror, so that’s not so good. Oh… also the kids. No Child Left Behind has been a complete failure, so I guess you’ve screwed our children and prevented them from getting quality childhood educations – that’s okay though because they’re now more likely to vote Republican. Congratulations President Bush! You truly will go down in the history books for all of the ways you’ve protected our great nation.

Comment by Joe the thinker

Everybody thinks that the prisoners are just going to be released in the wild. NO they are not! Any idiot should realize that we must close Gitmo for the bad pr alone! Even if we stop the torture there nobody will believe it. The best course of action is to move the prisoners to another facility. And bringing the prisoners to the US is the last place they want to bring them. I agree this is a waste of money but I’m not sure of another way.

Even if Gitmo isn’t as bad as it is portrayed in the media, (torture, waterboarding, ect) we cannot afford to keep it open if we ever want to build more alliances in the international community.

Comment by Diane Hawkins

Closing down gitmo is a severe travesity! One, we need to find an alternate location for the detainee’s, and I cannot imagine a place more secure than Gitmo. Two, I doubt seriously there is a country on this planet that wants the detainee’s released to them. Three, if the detainee’s were tried by a court of US Law, and subsequently released into the USA none of us will be safe. I want to ask if anyone in the USA wants one of the detainee’s living next door to them? Think about the consequences here people!

It took 7 years after the first WTC attack for an attack on American soil. Please remember that. These large-scale attacks take several years to plan and execute. As a McCain backer I felt that the likelihood of an attack under Obama or McCain was much more likely during the 44th presidents term than during Bush 43’s. Just as It was argued Clinton didn’t do enough to halt groups like AL-Qaeda, it can be argued Bush did too much. Policies that protected us in the short term may have proven to unite the Muslim world and turn out more terrorists than before the attacks, and harm us in the long-term. Just remember the way the time cycle of these attacks work if god forbid it happens again.

Those of you who are defending the abhorrent pox known as Gitmo might remember the millions of American soldiers, all they way from the Revolution to WWII, who gave their lives in defense of American ideals. Chief among which is the concept of due process and a fail trial. Gitmo is an illegal concentration camp that we were too embarrassed to construct on the mainland wherein we hold citizens of other countries indefinitely and without charge. Furthermore, due to the confusion of war, it is very likely that a majority of those detailed were taken without reason. They may not have been extremists before we stole them away from their families and their homeland, but they certainly are after nearly a decade of illegal detention.

Comment by Super Ultra Patriot w/ 2 Lapel pins

I love comments such as thanks for 7 and 1/2 years of safety President Bush. Was not Bush president for 8 years. Why do you give him a free ride for 9-11. If you hired a body guard and they allowed someone to kill one of your family members would you say “Thats ok there was no way you could have stopped that, just keep us safe from now on” so why do this for Bush. The R. behind his name must give him a free pass or two.

Counting down the hours until a true american will fill the Commander in Chief position on Tuesday.

Comment by Thomas Duvall

Please Read Washington Post article by Bob Woodward “Top Bush official Susan Crawford says detainee was tortured”. These people make me sick. He was left out in the cold Cuban air to freeze. This was torture according to her. Who cares in the first place? These guys were captured in combat against American Troops. There plans were to kill ALL AMERICANS. Do WHATEVER it takes to make them talk. Then I do not care what you do as long as they can never hurt anyone again.

Comment by RuleOfLaw

Here’s a crazy idea: let’s actually put them on trial or at least follow the Geneva Convention. Holding anyone indefinitely without trial or ignoring the Geneva Convention is not representative of the America I know.

Comment by Sandy Bartlett

It seems its a foregone conclusion that Obama will close Gitmo. There is talk about sending the detainees to two possible areas in my State. I say they will fit very nicely in Chicago . SEND THEM THERE PREFERRABLY RIGHT BETWEEN THE AYRES AND THE OBAMAS OLD HOUSE.

Comment by Sandy Bartlett

It seems it is a foregone conclusion that they are closing Gitmo and they are thinking about putting them in two places in my State. I say put them in Chicago they would fit very nicely there and understand they’re kind of politics. Actually, build them some houses right between the Aryes and the old Obama and his cronies house.

Comment by Jean

All of you people complaining about Gitmo have forgotten one thing. The fate of every single soldier the terrorist have gotten their hands on. They have been found dead, tortured and in some cases it has been hinted that they were beheaded. What Geneva Convention Rights did they get from the terrorists? Ask McCain what protection he got from the same rules while in the Hanoi Hilton. The answer is none and you want to complain about the treatment of people that would killl you in a heart beat. The press has been busy exagerating every little thing where the US military is concerned regarding the prisoners while hardly mentioning what has happened to the few of our soldiers those sick SOB’s have gotten their hands on. I cannot believe how gullible some of my fellow Americans are.

Comment by Speaker-to-Animals

The detention camp at Guantanamo Bay violates rights of habeas corpus and due process first set forth in the Magna Carta. Furthermore, the atrocious treatment of prisoners held captive there, has refused to apply the Geneva Conventions to prisoners of war from Afghanistan, and has misused the designation of “illegal combatant” to apply to criminal suspects on U.S. soil. Its very existence is one more stain on the human rights record of the U.S. For these reasons, it should be closed as soon as possible and its prisoners treated in accordance with due process and the U.N. International Declaration of Human Rights.

Without going for Victory which we did not, War will be world wide. Open borders tho our Constitution forbids lawlessness and all the feaks how swore to defend WE THE PEOPLE, have done nothing but make a lawless Democracy out of a REPUBLIC. For all the brain dead out there, A democracy is where we vote and the government does as they please. A Republic is where we the people vote and the government serves us. PC is ass backwards..Government has already signed us over to the EU and also the North American UNION..we are no longer a Republic and all your rights are washed up as they put in a police state to control..Many things you don’t like is a together plan with both the Rep and the Dems..one bird..and now bush just hand the left the reigns to finish us off. How long do you not see the scam of the 1900’s being done by the private Federal reserve who has NO business to do what our gov is letting them do to us. HOw many gangs, drugs and rapes, murder , home invasion, rats the size of cats, and every disease back with us and 25,000,000 ilegals get it all free while we are taxed to high heaven, SS is taxed thanks to Bill Clinton from 50% to 85 and next comes the 100%. When gov tells you they are going into 14 trillion debt to get out of debt while the big boys pocket our taxes which are also ilegal on your support goes as well as your jobs over seas. China owns 605 of us an Islam ownes the rest and all you can say is OK…So busy hating Bush and his policy you got the same…

I SEE NO GOOD REASON TO CLOSE GITMO. THE PEOPLE ENCARCERATED THERE ARE WAR CRIMINALS. THEY WOULD SOONER SEE AMERICANS TORTURED AND DEAD AND THEY WOULD NOT THINK TWICE ABOUT IT. IT IS TIME FOR THE BLEEDING HEART LIBERALS TO GET THEIR HEADS OUT OF THE GROUND (OR ELSEWHERE) AND GROW A SPINE. AS FAR AS “WATER BOARDING”, I SEE NO REASON TO PAMPER THEM. THESE CRIMINALS WOULD USE ANY MEANS POSSIBLE TO DESTROY OUR NATION. I DO NOT NEED TO KNOW WHAT THE CIA OR ANY OTHER SECURITY ORG. IS DOING TO KEEP AMERICA AND AMERICANS SAFE. THAT IS THEIR JOB AND I EXPECT THEM TO DO IT TO THE BEST OF THEIR ABILITY. THEY SHOULD NOT BE HAMPERED BY CONGRESS OR THE LIBERAL LEFT.

Comment by Gitmo: Where we "get mo' " information

Look, everybody likes violence on both sides of the spectrum. Everybody likes to feel safe. Everybody likes to plunder whatever enemies they have. Obama may or may not save humanity or send us all straight to hell–we have no idea, yet. What we do know is that Guantanamo does not work, and it is just pissing everyone off that already either doesn’t like us, or that has shaky feelings toward us to begin with. If it worked, I wouldn’t care about the global disapproval–results are results, we’ll take them how we can at this point. The fact that it doesn’t work (and could be a potential cause of blowback) should be enough grounds to cancel the process. Either release the people who you have nothing on, or try them in court and imprison them here–hell, build a brand new prison made out of cesium if you want to facilitate a slow death. If they’re proven guilty, have at it.

Comment by Helena Connolly

Are these prisoners going to be disbursed willy-nilly to disappear into the United States and cause more damage to the Country – I hope not…….they should get “HARD LABOR” for so many years and then be turfed back to wherever they came from originally and perhaps look after Usama Bin Laden for his remaining years….

Comment by Jack Hensley

If these “peace and love” lefties think there is no treats from these nuts in Gitmo each of them should be forced to take one home with them.

Maybe when they got their throats slit in their sleep the left wing might finally GET IT!

Our enemys do not know the words to “com by ya” not yet!

Comment by john doe

I don’t think they should close gitmo. the majority of the people there have been captured from the battlefield. The majority of those released went back to al-qaeda. Americans are really naive..! Sorry to hear that the majority of voters want gitmo closed.

Comment by Marissa

You right-wingers are such fabulous spellers. I am shocked and amazed at the average IQ of you Bill O’ Reilly lovers. I am pretty sure that Barack closing Gitmo is not code for “Set all the prisoners free and let them run for governor of Texas.” So don’t worry right wingers, you can still hold on to that office! Gitmo is more a symbol of torture and misuse of power by America and the Bush administration than it it anything else. These prisoners are just going to another high security prison, whoop-de-doo! Same security, but with humane treatment, what a novel idea!

Comment by Fred

WOW!, 8 years of Bush bashing by the MSM, the Hollywood morons and reports from other left wing news organizations has really left it’s marks on many weak-minded Americans. Most of those goons being held at Gitmo were captured on the battlefield trying to kill our guys and gals in the military, POW’s aren’t given trials, they’re usually held until wars end. These jihadist dogs are not signee’s to any human rights protocols. They are not entitled to the Geneva Convention policies, nor, any other agreements made by rational governments. They give no quarter to prisoners when they capture them, and, deserve none when in custody. Nobody should waste their sympathy on the likes of them, these are the guys that hide behind women and kids while trying to kill anyone that doesn’t share in their extremist islam views. You are only entitled to get what your willing to give folks. You people that give more consideration to them than to your own people in our military, frankly, make me sick.

Comment by eric

We should release them…otherwise we are just procrastinating when we demand the release of our soilders and citizens that are kidnapped or captured by Alkeida. If we want the kidnappings in the middle east to stop, then we must set an example for the Alcida, and not detain their soilders as well. Its an “eye for an eye” attitude these evildoers have…We’ll never stop the kid-nappings of citizens/soilders in the middle east if we mistreat their soilders like we have been doing

Comment by Ronald Reagan

I voted yes, as did most of you out there. If we must keep Gitmo going, to be fair and balanced, we should send Bush, Cheney, Rove and the rest of the gang as its residents. Remember, at Gitmo, a trial isn’t necessary. This would save us from the pain of putting this gang on trial.

Comment by Kim

Just like so many other campaign promises Mr. Obama made, this one may have a paper order but it it will takes months if not years to move all of these inmates who no one wants in their jurisdiction or country! Let’s hope he doesn’t just let these dangerous criminals go!

Comment by Randy Quickly

I voted YES because NO is an ugly word.

Comment by Jim Cummings

If GITMO saved ONE American life it was worth it. The Muslim terrorists tortured TO DEATH our soldeirs and drug them through the streets. But, we didn’t do that. You fight fire with fire. But, BO will give that away too. Welcome to give away USA freedom by BO and The Democrat Liberal controlled Congress (since 2006). Maybe they’ll start a new rock band with the name.

Comment by Lynn

We NEED to keep threats to our country confined and investigated, interrogated. This is COMMON SENSE! And where would these terrorists go? This shows how weak Obama is when it comes to protecting our country! He is too mamby pamby obviously. What is he thinking here?
I bet he wants to sit and have tea with them and “discuss” their minds, beliefs, get to know them??
A big DUH here…. scary, we are worried about our country’s security now for sure. We don’t have confidence in Obama in this area At ALL..

Comment by BillAyton

To all you bleeding hearts that want a better life for those Arab animals, do you realize what their life would be like at San Quentin or Florence, Colorado or PelicanBay. They would pray to Allah to get back to Gitmo…believe me

Comment by kingswoodroad

They cut our heads off and chant, “Allah”, and we, in Gitmo, make sure they have only food sensitive to their religion and beliefs. They are allowed to pray five times a day. Do they have a Gitmo? Would they let us pray to God and be sure to get a copy of the Bible for us to read? Where will we put these detainees; these people that we took off the battlefield with no uniform, no insignias announcing their rank? To Hell with the Geneva Convention, who needs it?

Comment by EZ2C

The people interned at Gitmo are prisoners of war and are entitled to protection of the Geneva Convention. They are not criminals and therefore are not entitled to the court system.

If Gitmo is closed they will have to be transfered to another location and this location should be called by the correct name, Prisoner of War Camp No 1.

Comment by Mike

The people being illegally held at Gitmo are INNOCENT until proven guilty under the rule of law we supposedly cherish so dearly. Either charge them and try them legally, or let them go. These are men who have families and loved ones. Holding them illegally is sure to spawn more violent hatred against the U.S. Why cant we set an example for the world for justice and human rights instead of trying so hard to be the opposite of what we were supposed to stand for?

Comment by Jean Goncalves

Closing Gitmo would be a big mistake and very dangerous! Doesn’t Obama realize that these scum were captured on the battlefield killing our American military and innocent people?

They are not citizens and shouldn’t be tried in our courts – they have no civil rights. Sixty one that have been released have returned to terrorism activities.

Radical Islam makes no secret that their goal is world domination and these scum at Gitmo should all be executed – they have shown no mercy to our soldiers and contractors in Iraq.

By the way, why doesn’t Obama bring them to the White House to live with his family?

Comment by Guess

What amazes me, we never learn. We are two generations removed now from WWII, and one removed from Vietnam. We don’t remember what or how Americans behaved before, during and after WWII except for the period movies of the time. Vietnam was different, news everynight at 6 – soldiers being killed routinely. America called soldiers ‘baby killers’ and worse. Closing GITMO? I don’t really care if they do or don’t; perhaps it would be much better given the history that it is closed but the part that concerns me and should concern all of you instead of this @#$%@# rehortic being spewed is what do we do with them, where do we send them (who wants them)? War isn’t a country to country match where both sides play by the same rules – today it is about beliefs and multi-national individuals standing against soverign nations and WE have gotten fat, lazy, and complacent.

Comment by retrogamer500

I agree with closing Gitmo. People have been tortured there because it is technically not on U.S. soil, so the torturers can’t be prosecuted. Some people don’t care about terrorists getting tortured, but this is America, and everybody should be accountable for their actions.

Torture just isn’t right. You can torture anyone and get them to say anything. It only takes so much to break a man, even if they are innocent. I believe that even terrorists should have the same protection as everyone that the U.S. comes across. Most of the detainees haven’t been to a court trial for years, and I believe that everyone is innocent until proven guilty.

How does torturing prisoners save lives?

Comment by Doug Warner

Sure, go ahead and close GITMO, put all those terrorists back on the battlefield. While you are at it, why not send a few billion to the terrorists too. Seems like the bad guys have all the breaks and all the rights when you ask the Democrats. I keep thinking back to the two magazine pictures, one with Obama dressed up in a robe and turbin and the other with his picture and the phrase, “I AM GOD.” He proves daily that his priorities do not include the American people, or for that matter, the American continent. My suggestion is that everyone buy thier guns now so they can protect themselves after the innauguration from all of the crooks and terrorists that Obama loves so much.
I can’t believe I served 28 years in the USAF, fought for my country, proudly and now have to see it turned over to someone like Obama who only wishes to turn it into a cesspool of debt, uneducated children, crime ridden streets, while he and his corporate friends (and the Clintons) get rich of us (and from all the money comong in to them from Dubai)
America is strong…we should be able to survive the next four years of Obama’s anti-military and anti American views. The bad thing is, it will be our tax dollars that Obama is throwing away while he asks us to work harder and sacrifice more. Thanks for nothing O-BUM-A

Comment by mike

yea lets just forget these are bad guys and the blood that was shed to put them there and 9-11 and the treatment our troops face to catch them again these people are not the type to say my bad you got me lets just be friends now weve seen the error of our ways the guy hasn’t even realy got started yet any thing he says he will do and does not will be blamed on the previous addministration any how .he wants to do such a thing so fast for the bad guys what about america and the treatment of citizens and our troops internet decapitations who is barock obama bin laden any way honestly where did this guy come from what did he use to do we are screewed .

Comment by Diana

I don’t understand any of these comments I’m reading about. To close Gitmo would be a disaster. To those that want it closed should remember that water boarding is not inhumane in my opinion because these people can stand and watch someone beheaded in the name of Allah and cheer about it. And you’re worried about water boarding. BULL…..They don’t fall under the Geneva Convention because this is not a declared war and no one was in “uniform”. Also…most of the detainees were picked up and transported from Afghanistan or Pakistan. Not Iraq. If they are released maybe each one of you will have an extra bedroom in your homes to house at least one.

Comment by Basscop

I bet most “yes” voters to close it, have never served in the armed services or ever had to fight for their own life. Maybe they should listen to someone has fought for his or her own life and ours at the same time. I know these liberal Hollywood people mean well, but when they never go to fight, they have a view that is not as well rounded as others who have paid the price. Gold Bless on soldiers.

Comment by Theresa

I think they should divide up the prisiners they release and send them to the Upper East End in Manhattan and Malibu Beach in CAlifornia where they will fit in with the rest of the Blame America First crowd. Theresa from Boise

send all the bank and auto people gitmo, let them use it for a resort.

if they close gitmo………they should not be sent to this country…..they should go back to there own country and be jail for the same thing.
Or send them to an island out in the pacific…..where its no mans land……no one can say nothing. If these country dont want them back to put in jail.

Comment by Jo Ann Spivey

Why not build a HALFWAY house out side the WHITE HOUSE and put the prisoners there. Let one of them hurt one of Obama’s kids and see what happens. I don’t think we would have to worry about torture.

I personally find it discusting that a 2 year senator from “Chicago Politics” can completely change our national scecurity proceedures with a stroke of a pen.
I pray this is not a prelude to another attack on our soil.

I say turn them all loose in California where nobody would notice.

On the other hand, they could all be appointed to congress, where they’re already in the majority.

Problem solved.

He is out of his freaking mind. This people aren’t criminals: they are POWs. duh. so us holding German, Japanese, Italian or otherwise prisoners in WWII was wrong because we didn’t charge them with a crime? WOW.

So, Obama is out of his freaking mind. But we already knew that.

Comment by Pat

If you want to know how we as a country have gotten so screwed up read the above comments of Retrogamer. It is this kind of ignorance that gets people like Obama elected

Comment by Pat

I have to comment on the close Gitmo people. Your idealistic view of this is childlike you have no idea of what you are saying. These captives know exactly why they are in there and they depend on the ignorance you display to get out to terrorize another day.

Comment by PJ

As far as Gitmo detainees are concerned the radical Islamist at Gitmo should have been secretly rung-out for information and then been done away with years ago. The American people don’t have the mental or emotional capacity to deal with the dark-side of war. War is war and culling the heard of humanity it isn’t a social event. Rarely do you hear please pass the Grey-Poupon and a box of small grenades.

The neophyte Marxian socialist who is controlled by the Chicago Political mob and who barely 50% of the voters elected to “Lead” the USA makes his very first action as President the release of sworn terrorist who want to kill the very people he is taking an oath to protect on the same day he takes the oath. Do you think he has an agenda?

Then again what would anyone expect from a self-defined intellectual elitist who has never stayed in one job long enough to ever be held responsibility for anything. The American people are not stupid but at least 50% of the voters are extremely gullible. Sadly, the new Marxist President with help from the cheerleading liberal press will likely win the day. So since we are stuck with the Press selected darling of Socialism, I suggest that the dumbest in Congress, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reed find a place in their home districts for these down trodden souls of Islamic fantasy.

Comment by Joe L. Ogan

If we release the terrorists from GITMO, they will almost certainly atack us again with resultant loss of American Lives.

Comment by Michael

All I can say is the obvious,. Most of the voters wanted change, and they are getting it. Whether or not it’s the kind of change they will agree with is now being seen, and will be in the coming months. Nobody really knows just what they got in Obama. I don’t think we will like it.

Comment by DICK ROBEY

THE U.S. REP AND SENATOR WHO VOTE FOR CLOSING SHOULD AN EQUAL % OF THOSE TERRORISTS PLACE IN THEIR STATES AND FUNDED BY A NEW SALES TAXES.

THE USA WILL BE ATTACK BY MUSLINS AT LEAST ONCE BEFORE THIS MAN LEAVES OFFICE. HE IS A STAR IN HIS OWN EYES BUT IS NOT NOR WILL HE BE CAPABLE AS A LEADER. BUT HE WILL BE MY PRESIDENT AND I WILL PRAY SINCERELY FOR HIM; MORE THAN MOST OF HIS FAN CLUB; AS A CHRISTIAN I REALLY BELIEVE IN PRAYER. I TRULY WANT HIM TO BE SAFE BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY I WANT HIM TO GIVE US ANOTHER 7 YEARS OF SAFETY THROUGH A DEMONSTRATION OF HIS STRENGHT; NOT POLL POPULARITY.

Comment by Jeanne Gratehouse

Where on earth are these terrorists going to go????? No country wants them–they’re killers!!!!!We all know they will only go to wherever the killings of innocents are needed! These people have no conscience or love or reasoning in therir natures! They were bred and born to hate & kill!!!!!!! Our country is slowly being lead off “for the slaughter”, and we can thank the “politically correct” crowd for that!! And all the leaders and people just look the other way!!!!! May God have mercy on our souls for the callousness our world has become!
Are people not aware that 3 of the men already “let out ” of Gitmo have already been caught IN THE ACT of terrorism??? Wake up and smell the coffee!!!

There’s a house in Chicago soon to be vacant (January 20th inaugeration day) with extra land around it — perhaps it would be a good place to house GITMO detainees.

Closing Gitmo, easy to campagain on. Obama if so, move them into Blair House!!

Comment by Daughter of Liberty

For the many people who are debating whether or not we should close down Guantanamo Bay, here is something to think about… When I was a young girl of about 9/10 my knowledge of what was going on in politics was not large but some things I was old enough to understand and remember. I recall Bush being elected president and taking office in the winter of 2001. I also remember 9/11 and the following invasion of Afghanistan. One thing that really stands out in my mind is the tale of a young woman soldier who was taken prisoner while serving in Iraq. After Jessica had been rescued, her story was told and we heard about her experience, how she had been mistreated while in captivity. The fact that she had been mistreated stuck fast in the mind of a child and I remember thinking gratefully that America would never treat someone in this manner-America does not torture! And perhaps at the time we did not, however, in the years since then things have changed, and I am sorry to say that I can no longer look at America and come to the same conclusion. Even if we were to close Guantanamo Bay, it could never undo the damage already done to those lives forever shattered physically and mentally by methods used by the Nazis and Japanese captors during ww2. And what of the destruction caused to the Constitution and Geneva Convention, the simple laws of justice? I ask you – where is our humanity!? Visit: 9/11 research.com!

Comment by elizabethhwhite

It is ridiculous to close Gitmo. If they close it all prisoners should be sent to Washington, DC where all of the politicians who have no idea where to put them can figure it out. At least send them to states with Democratic congressmen. Europe doesn’t want them. That is for sure.

Comment by Edward Skinner

Gitmo is just a place. Close it and you still have to put these people somewhere. I suspect the real motivaion of the ones that wnat it closed is the eventual release of those held. Release them where?
For all those that are concerned with the welfare of these jihadis please tell me very specifically what it is you want to happen with these people. Please be very specific.

Comment by Cindy

Obama should close Gitmo and send the prisoners back to Iraq to be tried in the Iraqi courts.

Comment by Diane Pence

Send the detainees to Fort Lee. That way the new President and Vice President can visit their new friends and make sure they are well cared for. That personal touch goes a long way. :)

Comment by Diane Pence

Transfer the Gitmo detainees to Fort Lee so our new President and VP can visit their new friends often to ensure they are well taken care of. That “personal” touch goes a long way.

Comment by Steve

If anyone truly thinks there is a correst answer to this problem…Think again! World Opinion and politics are the major factors for consideration. And, as you know there is no winning team in either of those arenas! So, what do we do? We will make a whole bunch of Americans somewhere very upset no matter what happens. Obviously we will not execute them which probably would have been the best solution. Cuba doesn’t want them if you can believe that! It does appear though that the government in the Congo might be able to use them! They may wish to wait until the genocide that is most likely going to happen all over again to become a reality. They will then need a hardened bunch of confirmed terrorist to do their bidding!

On a serious note! I think they should be relocated them to Alcatraz island. Reopen that old federal prison and and operate it using the military. Yes, it will be an expensive consideration, but what won’t be? They wll have containment away from the land popualtion. Of course Dianne Feinstein will not hold still for that solution, but there you go with the Politics again. We have one year before they are put somewhere so we better figure out how to get around them having rights when brought to the United States. Our lawyers here would make it a circus. Can you imagine their defense team supenoing every military soldier who may have had contact with them and asking them under oath if they witness any harsh or unusual punishment. That is just the start! Wow!

Comment by scott

Close it down and send them to Crawford!

Comment by KOOCH

President Obama: You seem to be in a quandary as to where to relocate the combatants at Gitmo when you shut it down. I suggest you move them to the White House basement, probably the most secure place on the planet with the possible exception of the gold vault at Ft. Knox.

Comment by Lou

As a disabled purple heart American veteran I feel that it is a shame and a disgrace to allow the enemies of the United States to go free. From the experience that I had in the war zone they have not had any kind of sympathy for us and would love to see all Americans dead.

Comment by xeli

The fact that Obama is closing Gitmo does not warrant the “idea” that terrorists are going to roam free among us this is totally ludicrous. Obama’s administration circulated a draft executive order that calls for closing the Guantanamo Bay detention center within a year and reviewing the cases of the nearly 245 inmates still held there. The order also would suspend pending war crimes cases for 120 days. These prisoners are just being “held” no trials no convictions just a big waste of our tax money. Gitmo costs approximately 90 million dollars a year to run and for what? To hold random suspects which include children? Lets not forget the 12 year old that was released a few years ago and the 15 year old Canadian boy that was tortured, there are people still there from the Mariel Boat lift for Christs sake!!! David Iglesias, New Mexico’s former U.S. attorney and current prosecution attorney with the Office of Military Commission will have the position of actually prosecuting the remaining terrorists. Part of the EO is for the administration to determine what happens to convicted terrorists. Perhaps there will be a “designated” federal prison with their name on it who knows, but I doubt Obama would seriously allow real terrorists to roam free, we still have the death penalty you know.

Comment by Concerned American

This is the most ridiculous move any President of OUR great nation could make. These people are terrorists and one beheaded Daniel Pearl. Maybe a prison should be built in DC so they can be watched carefully by allll that want this!!!!!!!

Comment by Sam

What an idiot. I don’t mind him closing the prison, there were some questionable practices there, but granting them citizens rights and trying them in civilian courts is wrong. I hope the prosecutors in the Nurmberg trials are rolling in their graves. Trying terrorists and war criminals in US courts is stupid. Since when are captured pow’s given citizens rights?

Comment by richard bratton

if they insist on closing gitmo let’s send them to washington dc or alcatraz! the guards should be either qualified relatives of 9-11 victims, infantrymen returning from the middle east! general swatzkoph would be a great honorary warden!! if they’re in dc the bleeding hearts can go visiting daily to make sure thy’re being coddled properly!!! if it’s alcatraz pelosi can make michelle a special envoy to ensure they have adequate care and conselling!!!!!

Comment by shon

I am in total disagreement with his decision to close GTMO. To all you peopel who say we, americans, violate the geneva conventions, magna carta and all that stuff, you are ignorant, you base all your reasoning off what the news and other things like that. I say we should keep it open because of the simple fact that they are or have affiliations with terrorism. Also I can say for a fact that they arent mistreated there, in fact they get more medical treatment than the guards down there do, they get fed better and are treated better. So please do us a favor and shut up with your comments about violations of what ever act/convention/rights. Thanks!

Comment by Scott

If they’re going to put these terrorists into American prisons, they should place them into the general population and see if they last a month.

Comment by Warner

I disagree with the closing of Gitmo. This idea is being totally engineered by “political correctness” idiots.
We are in a war on terrorism, and most of the U.S citizens would like to win. To import terrorists is complete idiocy, (we already have enough here) and those who want them here must be idiots also. The idea of allowing them to have access to the U.S. judicial system is a total waste of millions of dollars of the taxpayers money and years of time.
Mr. Murtha is one of the biggest fans of realeasing them to his home state and have the taxpayers pay for him to build a new prison in his home state. I say,”if he loves them so much, he should be with them”. He is such a dishonest person.
Keep the detainees there and let them go through a NON POLITICAL military wartime court.
