“Paranormal Activity” Brings Terror to Theaters
![]()
The rollout of horror film “Paranormal Activity” has been called the “marketing story of the year” by The New York Times. The ultra-low-budget film cost about $15,000 to make. Early studio estimates show it raked in about 7 million dollars over the weekend.
“Paranormal Activity” has been marketed more as an “experience” than anything else, with the trailer mainly showing terrified moviegoers reacting to scenes, rather than the scenes themselves.
Ad Age credits part of the success with “letting consumers play distribution chief,” rather than studio executives.
It originally played in college towns with midnight shows only. But the film’s website added a feature to allow fans to request the movie be shown in their area. Demand grew for the “Paranormal Activity,” leading it to open nationwide Friday. The online buzz also included chatter about the film on social networking sites such as Twitter.
“Paranormal Activity” is being compared to another small budget film with huge box office returns, “The Blair Witch Project.” That film was made for about $25,000 in 1999. Since then, it has banked more than 140 million dollars.
I love this concept of using the realtively new medium of social-networking sites to drive demand for a product, or in this case, a movie. This experiment in wrestling control of distribution away from executives and allowing people to determine what they want to see is not bad for the consumer, but one has to imagine that it is the first crack in the seal on Pandora’s box if you are the guy who determines what gets released where. Yet the irony is that consumers have no idea what it actually takes to release a movie nationwide. Beyond the normally millions of dollars the studios have invested in creating alternate realities for viewers two-hours at a time, determining where and when to release these films, how much to expend on advertising and all of the other tangibles that go into the overall budget of the film, the last thing an executive wants to do is to turn all of that over to a bunch a folks who earn enough to have a computer and Internet access. This experiment can only work with low and ultra-low budget films.
To be sure, consumers drive demand, but to allow consumers to simply voice demand for a multi-million dollar project and have corporations jump to attention is fiscally irresponsible. Social-networking is an advertising tool, not a consensus generator, even if it is a place to field test concepts. But I do like the concept, even if it is financially restricted to small-scale projects.
I think it is great a small budget film has proven so sucessful over those lavishly hollywood bore fests that are always about the same thing. I’ll see it again. Small enterprise is still alive and well in our United States! Lets support it all we can.
spent the $10 to see the movie Friday night… did not find it to be the frightening at all.. Blair Witch was way better than this movie.. save your cash..
i want to see this movie but im scared too though lol
Seriously Scott, are you kidding? Blair Witch can’t even touch this movie. I’m still freaked out and I saw it 4 days ago! I have to see it again just to really watch it since there were a lot of times I was hiding my eyes behind my hands!!!
I went to see this movie last night, and could not fall asleep! I finally had to turn on the light to go to bed. I wish there were more horror films like this. It proves you dont have to spend millions of dollars on gore to make a FANTASTIC horror film!
Good post.. kep it up…
This is a very impressive post…
I went to see that movie with my bf, not really what i was expecting.. I have to agree with Scott, Blair Witch Project was way better than this movie.. I won’t recomend this movie..
Went I first entered the theatre I was a bit apprehensive as I forgot to put on my incontinence pants.
Whew!, before I knew it I had wet my drawers. It was worse than when I accidently smoked some of my son’s peyote (thinking it was my pipe tabacco) and watched Blair Witch Project. I can’t recommend this movie. Bring plastic sheeting with you.

I thought it was a very, very good movie! I have never been really scared by a movie until Sunday…. Phew! I didn’t know what to think, everything that I heard about the movie was from my two friends; they were completely freaked out before we went in to watch the darn thing… I have been recommending this movie all over the place, and I will probably go see it again.

This movie was dumb, its not even scary til the last 10 minutes.
this movie wasn’t scary at all (now people saying that i am showing off) i only got scared in the last two nights i mean, it is pretty dumb that the didn’t leave the house, and it is pretty dumb that you know it made all this noise. The movie was pretty cool, i didn’t think it was the scariest movie of all times, i just think that if the cast didn’t die, i think for me i would of liked the movie better. A+ for sure, that the movie looked 100% real that it wasn’t some stupid fake ass video, and i agree the trailer is the thing that made all the noise about the movie. But i will give it 4/5 for the movie, and only because the last two nights the other not scary at all. I kind of felt bad for Katy or Katie or whatever. The ending when they put the pictures of them like they were dead that was pretty cool. but if any one want to hate on me because i said my opinion send me a message on youtube account which is youtube.com/94massari, because i don’t check back on a website don’t even know the name off, that i found on google.com any ways SUCK IT
This movie is all hype! I was not frighten at all, total bore feast!
