Will 2012 bring the Apocalypse?

If you’ve been curious about whether the world comes to an end in 2012, or wondering if now is the time to seriously get closer to God …  please be assured that as far as any expert I’ve talked with …  the world will still be around pretty much as it is today in 2013. (That doesn’t mean, you shouldn’t cozy up to the big guy!)

Here’s the lowdown.

Fact: the ancient Mayans were great mathematicians and astronomers, obsessed with time. They created these long-count calendars of five cycles, totaling around 26,000 years. At the end of every cycle they predicted that some sort of major event would happen. What that event would be they didn’t know. The last cycle ends on December 21, 2012.

Director Roland Emmerich took that fact and created the worse-case scenario, for a big budget, $260 million, Hollywood disaster flick. It’s the disaster flick to end all disaster flicks.

Fact: Most Religions have End-Times prophecies. Most are preceded by some sort of series of cataclysmic events. None of the prophecies gives a time frame.

But that hasn’t stopped anyone from guessing.

People throughout history have looked on all our wars, natural disasters and general mayhem, as signs that the world is coming to an end. But yet, here we are.

There’s one prediction we can be assured of: With hundreds of books written about 2012 and the Mayan calendar, “2012″ the movie will likely bring good fortune to many a folk.

Well at least they’ll have a few years to enjoy their fortunes before the world comes to an end. :)

I am interested in the reaction to this film. Apparently this is similar to Orson Wells “War of the Worlds”. The hype, media attention, and the movie itself is causing fear. It is so bad, a priest in Brookings, South Dakota addressed it during his Sunday sermon because so many in his parish are genuinely frightened. At first I thought NASA having to issue a statement because of thousands contacting the agency about 2012 was really funny, but now when I realize some people actually believe this fable of 2012, it is less amusing.

No man knows the day or the hour according to Matt.24, and other verses from scripture, but we can know the general time because of the vast amount of information given on this subject from Daniel, Revelation, and other selected passages. We do know the end will come because God has said in His word that the world will not always exist as we know it now. You can Know for sure where you will spend eternity by a personsl faith in Crhist for the forgivness of your sin.

What you knew for certain the Mayans / Mya`nim were correct? What differences would you expect see other people’s behavior? What would you differently?

I haven’t seen the movie yet but I see the first weekend made money. That’s what Hollywood wants from all their movies! I agree with the Gentleman above that the end will come in God’s time table. This is just a movie and should be viewed as just that. Hollywood has made a number of these types of movies in the last 5 to 10 years so this is nothing new, but those out there that take these movies seriously and start building shelters and storing food and getting organized for the end are blind to the fact that we have a God that is in control of all our lives and events and you should only trust in that fact! I know that when the end comes we will not be able to save ourselves by anything we do, only by putting our faith in God will our outcome be guaranteed.

The only end we know to be inevitable is our own personal end. Whether we have 3 years or 3 days from 2012, every person should strive to get right with God before another day passes, because we never know when tomorrow will be our last day.

Stay blessed, your elegant thoughts are always a pleasure to ruminate over.
