Ferris Bueller for the 21st century

APLast week I interviewed the one and only “Ferris Bueller,” Matthew Broderick. Today I’m talking about a film some critics called “Ferris Bueller for the 21st century.”

The film is called “Charlie Bartlett,” and it stars one of my good friends, actor and singer/songwriter Tyler Hilton. It’s out on DVD today and stars Hilton as a bully with a Mohawk. (Robert Downey Jr., Hope Davis and Anton Yelchin round out the cast).

When I cover a premiere as a reporter, I usually work the red carpet, but don’t get to go into the theater with the actors. But as a friend of one of the “Charlie Bartlett” stars, I was much more behind-the-scenes than usual for this premiere!

The film was part of last year’s Tribeca Film Festival – and I got to attend the screening alongside the stars. Just as the film started, I panicked for a moment, worried that no one would laugh at Tyler’s funny lines. Luckily, he was a huge hit with the crowd – they laughed at all the right times. Whew!

At the after-party, I chatted with a very nice, down-to-earth man named Jay. Turned out it was Jay Roach, who produced “Charlie Bartlett,” as well as a little project you may have heard of… the “Borat” movie! He also directed the Austin Powers films. The guy is a Hollywood powerhouse and was also the most down-to-earth person in the room. And you thought there was no humility in Hollywood!

Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television

API’m reporting today on the death of comedian George Carlin at the age of 71.  Check out the full details here.

A couple years ago, I taught a journalism course at Monmouth University in New Jersey, and George Carlin was actually on the syllabus.

He made it into our discussions of the First Amendment, due to his 1972 standup act, “Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television.”

He performed the act on a Milwaukee stage.  Later, a recording of the act aired on a New York radio station, sparking a court battle that went all the way to the Supreme Court.  In 1978, the Court upheld the government’s authority to sanction broadcast stations for airing offensive language.  “So my name is a footnote in American legal history, which I’m perversely proud of,” Carlin later told the AP.

And there’s a lesson from Professor Dobson for you, no tuition required!

For more insight on Carlin’s impact, I turned to his fellow comedians.  I just got off the phone with talent manager Rory Rosegarten, who shared statements with me from Ray Romano and Robert Klein.  Klein says Carlin’s comedy “brightened the days of so many.”  And Romano says, “The world of comedy has lost a true pioneer.”

Tune in to FOX News today for more celebrity reaction, as well as some of our all-time best interviews with Carlin.

The ‘American Girl’ Dolls Come Alive!

APThe American Girl dolls and books are hugely popular among my nieces… and millions of other little girls. So the premiere of the franchise’s first major motion picture, “Kit Kittredge: An American Girl” at the Ziegfeld Theatre included tons of cute little girls, each clutching her favorite American Girl doll. So sweet!

Among the stars walking the red carpet were Abigail Breslin, who plays the title character; and Julia Roberts, executive producer of the film.

This event included a whole bunch of “cub reporters.” A crew near me had a girl who looked to be about 7-years-old working the red carpet. (Child labor alert! – Just kidding, it was cute.) The crew next to me included a couple teens doing a report for a Girl Scouts webcast. My good deed of the day was to encourage the young Girl Scout reporter to put her mic right next to mine during my interviews, so she could pick up all my celebrity soundbites. I’m a giver.

Julia Roberts walked by quickly, wearing sunglasses, but I did get her on tape saying she wanted to produce this film because the books are great.

Abigail Breslin was the last to arrive, and a publicist was pushing her so quickly from interview to interview that I felt bad for the 12-year-old star. I asked my questions quickly and then –payback time!– when she talked to the Girl Scouts, I shoved my mic into their interview to pick up a couple more soundbites.

Before you accuse me of exploiting Girl Scouts, I’ll have you know the correspondent from Extra scored FREE COOKIES from the Girl Scouts. (At least, I sure didn’t see him forking over any cash! But I did see him scarfing down some Samoas!)

Jill Dobson Meets Matthew Broderick

Image by Scott McDermott/Corbis9:20am- I arrive at New York’s Regency Hotel for an interview with Matthew Broderick. I’m excited to chat with him about his wife, Sarah Jessica Parker, as well as his latest film, “Finding Amanda.”

10:40am- It’s been more than an hour and I’m still waiting. Listening to the conversations of fellow reporters. Boring. Ooh- the publicist just called my name! One step closer to Mr. Broderick!

10:56am- Just finished my Broderick interview. He seemed like a genuinely nice guy. He told me how proud he is of SJP’s “Sex and the City” success, and about the couple’s plans to take time off this summer to relax and enjoy their 5-year-old son. He also laughingly told me how “cute” it was the one or two times when his co-star Brittany Snow would forget a line on the set of “Finding Amanda,” because, as he said, “I’d forget my lines everyday!”

11:05am- Brittany Snow tells me she met with actual prostitutes in order to research for her role. Many seemed overly upbeat about their career, so she played “Amanda” with that sense of (false) enthusiasm.

11:15am- The film’s writer/director Peter Tolan is hilarious! He cracked me up throughout the interview, even impersonating Woody Allen at one point. He also gave me an un-PC (but amusing) compliment - he called me a “good-looking broad”. Who uses the word ‘broad’ anymore?? I should have asked him then and there for the part of “News Reporter #2” in his next project. I just want one line!

Anyway, Tolan told me the film is based on his life as a director/producer. Broderick plays a TV producer who can barely stop gambling long enough to rescue his 20-year-old niece from her troubling career. Despite the serious topic, the film has lots of laughs, and Tolan tells me he and Broderick “laughed constantly during the entire 21 days of filming.” I believe him.

Attention, “Sex and the City” fans, the film’s opening weekend is finally here! I know many of you are planning to hit the theatre with a group of friends – and maybe grab a Cosmo or two afterward!

The Sex & the City stars -- Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall -- are back for an encore.

The details of the film have been kept extremely quiet, but I can tell you it will make you feel good about yourself, whether you’re in your twenties, thirties, forties or beyond.

Sex and the City: Hottest Ticket in Town

In case you weren’t able score tickets to the hottest event in town Tuesday night, here’s the scoop… Radio City Music Hall was the place to be, as the “Sex and the City” cast and the film’s famous fans turned out for the movie’s New York premiere.

Cameraman Tommy Chiu and I got there plenty early, and stood in the extremely humid, hot tents waiting for the celebrities to arrive. It was rainy outside the tents, and all the lights and people inside the tents make for a very sticky night. It was hard to look glamorous in those conditions, but the fabulous foursome managed to look amazing.

Sarah Jessica Parker’s blue eyes lit up as she spoke to me about the movie. When I asked whether there should be more movies like this one, featuring women ages 40-and-over, she said, “The idea of there being a marketplace for stories that are funny and rich and substantial and triumphant and ridiculous, that there is an audience for that would be fantastic.”

Famous fans of the movie, from Jerry Seinfeld to Katie Couric walked the Cosmo-pink carpet. And I had my first interview with singer Fergie. She sings on the soundtrack and was just gorgeous in person – I think she should be cast in a sequel, if there is one!

I also made a pitch for myself to get some bigscreen facetime. “Sex and the City” writer/director Michael Patrick King said to me, “I remember you – you interviewed me at the junket.” Since he was so friendly and warm, I completely took advantage and very smoothly suggested that if his next project has any reporter scenes, “Jill from FOX,” would be a perfect choice! Think he’ll give me a cameo in his next film??

Oh – and the highlight of my night was meeting Jason Lewis, who plays Smith Jerrod in the film and the series. I’m usually a germaphobe, but I must admit, I didn’t mind one bit when he kissed me on the hand – repeatedly! He’s dreamy.

Denise Richards visits FOX!

Denise Richards stopped by FOX News to talk with me about her love life – and her famous figure.  The star is perhaps best known for her role in the 1998 film “Wild Things,” which she describes as a “sexy thriller.”  Now she’s starring in a new reality show, “Denise Richards: It’s Complicated.”

Richards is also famous for her marriage to – and ugly divorce from – Charlie Sheen, the father of her two young daughters.  Richards grabbed additional tabloid headlines when she dated rocker Richie Sambora, fresh off his split from Heather Locklear.  Richards tells me, “Everyone makes a point of saying that I like bad boys.  And in my defense, Charlie was a reformed bad boy and Richie’s not a bad boy.  He’s actually an amazing guy and a great dad.”

Check your TV listings to see the mother of two as she searches for a new man in her life.  One thing is for sure, with looks like hers, she has no trouble attracting men.  So how did she get that fantastic figure?  She says, “My workout secret is pilates.  Hands down, it’s the best.  After two kids, that is the only thing that got my belly flat.”

After our interview, I walked Richards and her publicist Jill Fritzo out.  As soon as they reached the sidewalk, Richards was promptly swarmed by fans and paparazzi.  I guess all that attention is part of what makes her life so public… and so “Complicated.”

Will We Get the “Real” Lindsay Lohan?

We’ve all read countless headlines about Lindsay Lohan’s ups and downs. With all that media attention, why would the Lohans invite a camera crew into their home?

Starting this week, a reality series called “Living Lohan” will chronicle the lives of Lindsay’s family. It will focus mainly on Lindsay’s 14-year-old sister, Ali, and her mom/manager Dina Lohan.

The show will focus on Ali’s efforts to break into the music biz and on this highly publicized family. Ali tells me, “We’re really close.  We’re all like best friends, we tell each other everything.” Dina tells me the family had to do the reality series because with all the tabloid attention “our backs were against the wall.”.  Dina says viewers will have to “watch and see” if Lindsay makes an appearance in the show.

If you’re up for “Living Lohan,” check your TV listings.  But beware - the Lohan lifestyle is full of drama, paparazzi and false plastic surgery rumors!

Jill Dobson on Indiana Jones Set!

See that photo of me in the Peruvian jungle? Would you believe I’m actually standing on leaf-covered Styrofoam in the middle of a Hollywood film set?

It’s true – I had the opportunity a few months ago to visit the soundstage where much of “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” was filmed. The production is so top-secret that the Paramount Pictures marketing department kept the tapes until now. That way, I couldn’t give you a sneak peek before today – the day of the film’s release.

Here’s some insider scoop you won’t hear anywhere else: The leaf-plus-Styrofoam combination is surprisingly slippery – I actually wiped out while shooting a standup! My high heel punctured the gazillion-dollar set, and when I yanked it out, I took a piece of foam with me.

After that, I switched to flats. My producer, Ashley Dvorkin, is still laughing about it, 3 months later! Anyway, it was fascinating to see the giant, fake jungle and get a glimpse of what goes into a potential blockbuster like Indiana Jones.

And it was even more fun interviewing Harrison Ford about the film – see my interview for yourself at www.foxnews.com/redcarpetrewind. Check it out and let me know whether you’re an Indy fan!
