I’ve covered enough high profile search and rescues to know that if the missing would have had some kind of a GPS locator beacon they probably would still be alive. James Kim, the San Francisco techie who got stuck in the Oregon mountains during a snowstorm could have been saved by technology. He left his family in the car while he went for help only to die of hypothermia while teams looked for him. Cases like that, led many people to buy the latest locator gadget. And now authorities are starting to see some abuse of the products by people who have little experience in the back country. They call it Yuppie 9-1-1.

Mostly it’s people hitting the S.O.S. when they’re tired or cold and don’t want to work to get out of the woods. Another abuse takes the cake. A father and son were camping in Arizona. They initiated a search three days in a row. The last time was because they drank water from a stream that tasted salty. Irritated rescuers finally yanked them out of the woods. Over a 15 year period search and rescues in national parks alone cost taxpayers more than $58-million. Beacons can actually reduce the cost of legitimate emergencies by giving rescuers an exact location to pinpoint the search. But abuses are frustrating sheriff’s departments and the many volunteers who conduct these operations. There’s no substitute for preparation. And if these novice outdoorsmen continue to be the ‘hiker who cried wolf’ they could end up getting charged for their ‘rescue’. Currently New Hampshire is the only state that allows for a rescue bill, but if the Yuppie 9-1-1 trend accelerates look for other states to follow.

The buzz saw is spinning, just not all day long. At Shell Lumber in Miami, the whiff in the air isn’t just the sawdust; it’s also about business starting to regain some traction. Shell is a construction supply depot, selling anything and everything you would need to build a home, remodel a kitchen or just turn an old house into a modernized marvel.

Back in ’05 and ’06, when new homes and condo towers were being built all up and down south Florida, this place would have a line of pickup trucks waiting for the store to open every morning at 5:30 a.m. That’s not the case these days, but owner Adam Haase says, optimistically, perhaps the swing of the economic pendulum is heading back up towards good times again.

In the past week, he’s hired 3 new employees to work the floor, helping customers who are coming in to buy the supplies for new projects and new contracts. Sales are happening, he says, just not the high-end sales, like the expensive Brazilian lumber for Amozonesque backyard decks.

“People are opening their wallets, but they’re not emptying their wallets,” he says. But the more business he gets at Shell Lumber, he says that’s a direct link to what’s happening in the construction economy at large. This, on a day when Florida’s Labor Department just announced that the Sunshine State’s unemployment level has now hit 11%, the highest since 1975.

The White House “beer summit” will take place Thursday evening at a picnic table outside the Oval Office on Thursday, weather permitting.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs says that’s when President Barack Obama will share a beer with Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates and Police Sergeant James Crowley and discuss the fallout from Gates’ arrest at his Cambridge home earlier this month. It happened after a woman called 911 to report what she thought was a break-in at a home just off Harvard Square.

It turned out to be Gates, who is black, trying to get into his home after returning from a trip to China. Crowley, who is white, arrested Gates for disorderly conduct following an alleged verbal tirade. The charge was eventually dropped.

Obama got involved when he was asked about it at a news conference and responded that police had acted “stupidly.” On Friday, the president went into the White House briefing room and told reporters he wished he had used different language.

As the sun rises over Tijuana, I start to think about all the changes we’ve seen along this border in the last seven years. We didn’t think twice about heading south to cover immigration issues or other stories, but now, that’s almost out of the question because of the ongoing and brutal drug war. Just two days ago, two more headless bodies were dumped in Tijuana and another bunch of police were arrested for corruption. President Calderon’s office tells me that they’re doing everything they can and by most accounts here on the border, they are making some progress. However, there is still widespread corruption in government and law enforcement south of our border, which makes the job of our border agents that much more difficult and imperative. As we report on the nearly 40 billion in illegal drug profits flowing from the US into Mexico (compared with an estimated 25 billion sent home by immigrant workers), Customs and Border Protection passes along this release and photos:

SAN DIEGO – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at San Diego area ports of entry have noticed a disturbing new trend in the past several months involving an upswing in the use of boys and young adult males to smuggle narcotics taped to their bodies as they enter the U.S. on foot.
Since late August 2008, when CBP officers first noted the upswing, until the end of last month CBP officers at the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa passenger ports apprehended 157 teen and adult pedestrians entering the United States from Mexico carrying a total of 285 pounds of marijuana, 1.2 pounds of heroin, 4.7 pounds of cocaine and over nine pounds of methamphetamine concealed under their clothing.
The majority of the border crossers were young U.S. citizens while the rest were Mexican males. They ranged in age from 15 to 56, with the majority being in their teens or early 20’s. Almost 75 percent of the males were under 29 years of age and 25 percent were under age 18. Most of the males caught smuggling narcotics were wearing loose, multiple layers of clothing to hide the bulging packages taped to their bodies.

Although strapping narcotics to a traveler’s torso is not a new smuggling technique, apprehensions since last August have burgeoned 811 percent at San Ysidro and 316 percent at Otay Mesa compared to the same period the previous year when officers discovered a total of 23 pedestrians entering local ports with concealed narcotics. The trend has continued into this month with the apprehension on March 2 of three 14-year old U.S. citizen boys caught smuggling a total of  over 11 pounds of marijuana as they entered the San Ysidro port pedestrian facility from Mexico.

If you’ve ever been to Rome, you know it’s not hard to find a good meal here, and certainly not if you know where to look. We normally know where to look.”

Art history professor Liz Lev, someone we frequently interview on more intellecutal matters, has also been gaining a reputation as an excellent cook. So Rome producer Mario Biasetti and I, intrepid reporters that we are, went to check out the rumor for ourselves.

Liz was kind enough to invite us into her kitchen to show us how to make pasta all’amatriciana. I’m not a foodie, so I can’t give you an entire history of the dish, but it comes from a town not far from Rome called Amatrice.

It’s simple — pasta, a bit of pork, tomato sauce, onion, garlic, pecorino cheese — and quite filling, the kind of thing shepherds in the area have been eating for centuries. It’s also a classic Roman dish.

This is Phil Keating on the scene in Tampa, Florida today for the highly anticipated “face the media” news conference with New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez, the highest paid player in Major League Baseball history.  More than 200 representatives from the media showed up at George Steinbrenner Field, where the Yankees hold spring training, which is now underway.  A-Rod, a three-time American League MVP and A.L. leader in home-runs during the three seasons he was at the Texas Rangers, ’01, ’02, ’03.  As it turns out, these were years that he was juicing.  Sports Illustrated broke the story earlier this month that in 2003, he’d tested positive for testosterone and Primobolan, both currently banned by the league but not specifically at that time.

A-Rod confessed he and his cousin injected the steroids about two times a month, for 6 months during those three years.  He blames it in curiosity, immaturity and a desire to have more energy, under the pressure of having signed a 250-million dollar contract with the Rangers.

He says he’s sorry and that he will now participate in doing a nationwide anti-steroids campaign.  During his opening statement, he got to the very end where he said “and to my teammates…,” and as he looked over to the teammates gathered there in support, A-Rod clearly became almost overwhelmed and on the verge of tears.  He bit his lip.  He sat back.  He breathed.  He looked at the packed tent.  And, 37 absolutely silent seconds later, he leaned back up to the mic and said “….thank you.”

The day here, opening for Spring Training, absolutely gorgeous.  Cloudless skies, 74 degrees.  I think I am a little bit sunburned.  Life is good when you work out of the Miami Bureau!!

Happy Valentine’s Day! Whether you’re single or in love, there are many Hollywood heartthrobs in the same boat as you!

Tracee Ellis Ross tells us she’s single and looking for love! Tia Mowry tells Fox, “I’m a sucker for love. I love Valentine’s Day. My husband says that there’s a surprise awaiting me.”

Omar Epps has reservations for romance. He tells Fox, “I think I’m going to keep it simple this year. I think I’m just going to do some dinner. A nice dinner and maybe go out dancing or something.”

The people of Coatesville, PA are sleeping with one eye open, fearing that at any minute their house could be set on fire. At least one arsonist is on the loose, and it’s most likely one of the town’s own.

There have been 30 arsons in this small city since the beginning of last year. 15 were set in just the past month alone.  At first, the fires started small, mostly in trash cans.  Then sheds started burning.  Then abandoned houses. Now homes filled with sleeping people are going up in flames in the middle of the night. This past weekend a string of 15 row homes was destroyed, leaving dozens of people homeless.

The town is on edge.

People are filled with fear, anxiety and suspicion.  With no known suspects and no recent arrests, everyone is a suspect.  Townspeople are offering to do their own patrols. But because Pennsylvania is a “right-to-carry” state, Coatesville’s Chief of Police doesn’t want any bloody accidents.  He is urging people not to take matters into their own hands.

The most recent fire happened at 6:30 yesterday evening. Photographer Rob Ginnane and I were driving around town taking pictures of people removing flammable furniture from their porches when a firetruck zoomed past us, sirens blaring.

We followed it to Coates Street where we found a young man standing in front of his house. He was clutching a fire extinguisher to his chest, a look of fear in his eyes.  Minutes after coming home last night he heard a blast in his back yard and found his trash can on fire. “I had just seen a show on tv about escaping fires and all I remembered is they said to stay real calm,” he told me.

He put out the fire himself and called 9-1-1.

Everywhere you go people are talking about the fires. Rumors are spreading almost as fast as the flames, and you can almost smell the smoke coming out of the fuming people writing into the editorial page of the local papers. People want the firestarter(s) caught before they can strike again, and want to know why it’s taking police so long to do it.

Every generation has its defining NASA moment. For my parents, it was Neil Armstrong stepping on the moon. For me, it was the Challenger crash. But for many now, NASA doesn’t really come up on the radar. And that’s a shame. Because we’re entering a period where the choices made for the future of the agency could change the course of our own future.

Consider that the Space Shuttle program is set to retire in 2010. NASA has a flurry of activity over the next couple years to complete the work that needs to be done on the International Space Station. What comes after that? Well, for right now, NASA’s next big mission is “Constellation,” a program that can get us to the moon–and beyond. They’re building a new rocket from scratch and also the Orion, a new spacecraft. Unfortunately, there’s a five year gap between the two programs, meaning we won’t have a way to get to the International Space Station on our own. We’ll have to hitch a ride with the Russians, something that’s making a lot of people uncomfortable given the country’s recent conflict in Georgia.

So what do you do? You can extend the shuttle program. That’s what the Obama administration has proposed. Some say you could extend the program by two to five years, get a little more life out of the shuttle and also be able to test components of the new Orion in the process.

But the shuttle’s already more than three decades old. NASA says, every time a shuttle launches, there’s a one in 77 chance that something could go REALLY wrong. And that risk will only increase as the shuttles get older. Then there’s cost. Extending the shuttle might take money away from Constellation— after all, NASA only has a finite amount of resources. Critics of delaying the shuttle’s retirement say at some point—you have to stand down the old shuttle program, so you can transition people and facilities toward the new one.

Here’s another possibility that’s been kicked around. Instead of building a new rocket from scratch, why not modify military rockets already in use? That might save time and money. Critics of this option point to prospect of combining military and civilian space programs and suggest that it might begin a new era of secrecy in space, whereas now, NASA is able to cooperate openly with universities and space contractors.

Later this month, NASA is set to deliver a report on the possibility of extending the space shuttle’s lifespan. Long before that, President-Elect Obama is expected to name the new NASA head. Experts say that’s where we may get the best clue as to the future course of the agency. If the Obama team picks an astronaut or engineer, these experts say, expect to see NASA stay pretty much on its current path. If the President-Elect picks a scientist, human missions may take a backseat to pure science projects like the Mars Rover. Other talk includes highlighting NASA current environmental missions, like its surveys of the earth to assess global warming. Whatever the future direction, it’s clear there are no easy answers.

It’s coming…  Are YOU ready?!

Some two million plus folks are coming from all over the country to descend on the Nation’s Capital. Bridges are closing and authorities are telling people to plan to walk, wait and endure general hair-pulling lines at security check points.

But will it be worth the hassles?

You BETCHA! After all, this is not only one of the most historical inaugurations in history, but also a moment in time that I will enjoy telling my children and grandchildren about some day.

So how does one prepare to survive the headaches and chaos and truly enjoy this magnificent opportunity?

You have to get into… your ALOHA mode!

I’ll secretly confess that of all the balls that I am invited to attend as a reporter for FOX News, the Aloha Ball may be the winner!

For starters, it’s 11 degrees outside today, so wearing my best Hawaiian shirt with my tuxedo and a lei may be a mental boost alone! But more than that, it’s a first-ever Aloha Ball that seeks to celebrate the music, food and culture that shaped President Elect Obama’s youth. (And the legendary George Clinton and the P Funk All Stars will be there!)

Event organizer Skip Kelly told me a few days ago, “Barack may have learned his sharp political elbows in Chicago… but you know that calm and cool demeanor that he possesses? That’s his ALOHA spirit.”

The Kremlin is suddenly PR savvy!

For a second week 18 European Countries have little heat because Russia and Ukraine are squabbling over the price of gas and Russia has cut Europe off.

It happens almost every winter.  Russia cuts the gas supply when Ukraine’s contract comes up, Europe suffers and that is  the Kremlins leverage to get what it wants.   (I will have more on what it wants later.)

Russia has been accused of using energy as a weapon of being an unreliable partner to Europe for energy, and frankly most analysts believe that is all true.

But this year Russia wanted to make Ukraine look like the bad guy, so they had all the pieces in place to roll out a PR campaign.   They have hired Ketchum (a Washington PR firm which services the Kremlin – how odd is that?) to massage the Western media into believing  Ukraine is stealing energy, and that Ukraine is solely to blame for the crisis.

Ketchum has distributed Putin’s statements and Gazprom’s and organized conference calls with Russian speakers etc.

Ketchum was also used to help Russia get it’s message out after the crisis with Georgia and to improve Putin’s image.  Putins image is still what it is, terrible in the West,  but for Ketchum the contract is a good one.

Prime Minister Putin’s spokespeople  were also primed ready to roll out the message “this is only about money” not politics, poor little Russia “only wants to be paid fair  market prices for gas and Ukraine keeps stealing the gas” they say.

But we all know this gas crisis started after Ukraine’s Orange revolution and if you want to know the real motives behind the crisis take very seriously the not so subtle hint yesterday made Russia’s State Gas Giant Gazprom.

Gazprom Deputy CEO Sergey Kupriyanov said the U.S. is behind the crisis because of an agreement signed in December.  The Agreement is a strategic cooperation agreement between America and Ukraine which essentially helps Ukraine towards it’s goal of joining NATO one day.

In other words Russia is furious that Ukraine may be slipping away towards the West and gas is the way it will try to fight Ukraine.  Don’t forget Putin personally supported pro-Russian candidates who failed during the Orange revolution and he wants to settle that score.

It’s not my analysis, but that of Ukraine’s President Yushchenko who say’s Russia is trying to destabilize his Country.

The Ukraine Government is not innocent in all of this.

But if you are sitting in a freezing cold apartment in Bulgaria or Bosnia or one of the 18 Countries effected by all this hot air from Moscow and Kiev that isn’t getting through the pipelines, you would be amazed by the frosty callous use of Gas by the Kremlin for political purposes wouldn’t you?

Unless those people buy the Kremlin’s and Ketchum’s explanation  this is only about the price of gas?  Of course you might  ask “Why don’t they figure out a new contract in the Spring?  Why do I have frost on my walls in winter Mr. Putin”?

Angelina, Brad, George, Kate, Leo, Penelope… so much glamour!  It’s the Golden Globes red carpet – and we have all fashion, fun and awkwardness!

Kate Winslet was elegant in a black strapless gown with jewel detail.  Beyonce sparkled in a pale strapless gown and major jewelry.  Brad and Angelina were stunning as always, with Angelina in a metallic spaghetti strap gown. Jennifer Lopez rocked in a solid gold gown that highlighted all her famous curves!  But, where was her wedding ring???  And congratulations to Maggie Gyllenhaal for taking a fashion risk – and pulling it off – in an asymmetrical turquoise leopard print dress!

The most awkward moment on the carpet may have been during Tiki Barber’s interview on NBC with Entourage producer Mark Wahlberg and star Jeremy Piven.  Last month, Piven famously pulled out of Broadway show “Speed the Plow,” saying he had mercury poisoning – full article here!

On tonight’s red carpet, while Piven was complimenting Wahlberg, Wahlberg suddenly said of Piven, “I’m just wondering if this mercury poisoning is contagious.”  At that, Piven seemed to turn pale, and looked very uncomfortable.  Piven then tried to explain his (much-mocked) reason for leaving Broadway, and the more he talked, the more awkward it got!

One hundred and thirty thousand people  are expected to browse through more than 1.7 million square feet of stuff. From the latest TV’s, computers, camera’s and gadgets, to everything for your car, this years Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is packed. Even with the economy down, I notice all sorts of high end products, primarily because many have been in research and development for years. However, there are a ton of items that you’ll find on store shelves this year that are affordable and practical at the same time. A company called Cocoon has found a great way to carry your gadgets and computers and at the same time they are airport scanner friendly. Gunner Optics has glare proof glasses to protect your eyes, Sharp has some massive TV’s…  along with everyone else it seems…. that are huge and crystal clear. I will have all sorts of updates and pictures/video to come for the next few days at CES. Here is the latest… a green cell phone from Motorola.

How about a realistic race simulator like you’ve never seen before. It is amazing and already being used by big time professional drivers around the globe to prepare them for upcoming races and even allows the crews to make changes to their cars without running them on the track.

Getting around the CES 2009 is an adventure in itself. It is absolutely impossible to see everything and almost impossible to see the things that you plan on checking out. People and gadgets are everywhere, it actually might keep me from buying anything remotely digital for a few days. Well then again… maybe not. Seriously, while there are more vacant spots once reserved for companies than I’ve seen in the past few years, the floor is still packed with people interested in all the new stuff. I am trying to find things not yet seen, or are practical and affordable. Here is my next item.

As we begin a new year  I want you to remember something.

In these dangerous times, with wars raging on multiple fronts, it is important to remember there are millions of men and women who have volunteered to wear a uniform to serve and protect our great country. Whether you support the war or not, everyone should say thank you to our troops.

I am proud that members of my family have served our country.  My father Robert served in the Navy in the early 1950s.   My Uncle Jack was a navigator on a B17 Flying Fortress during WWII.   My Uncle Jerry served in the Pacific during WWII and my grandfather Daniel Sinise was in the army in WWI.

My brother-in–law Jack Treese served as a medic in Vietnam and wore his dog tags on a rosary with a St. Christopher medal.  I wore that same rosary and dog tags as my character, “Lt. Dan”, in the movie “Forrest Gump”.

With the help of the USO, my brother-in-law Jack, and my friend Jonathan Flora who used a handheld camera, you will see what happened on a seven day trip I took to Iraq last summer which will air this Saturday night on the FOX News Channel.  It was my fourth trip there with the USO.  My goal, as always, was to cover as many miles as possible and to take pictures, sign autographs and shake hands with as many troops as I could in the time I had. Stops included bases in Kuwait and in Iraq — Al Asad, Al Qaim, Ramadi , Habbaniyah, TQ airbase and Baghdad.

It was the first time I have let a camera follow me around on one of these trips.  Over the last six years, I have traveled around the world and all over the United States to visit and perform for our troops with the USO. I have supported many grass roots efforts as well and visited our wounded in the hospitals several times. I could not be more honored to play a small part in helping our troops and their families. We can never do enough for our veterans who have sacrificed so much to keep this nation free.

But we can always try to do more.

On a personal note, I appreciate that FOX News has allowed me to share some of my experiences by putting together a one hour special that is airing this Saturday, Jan. 10 at 9p ET on FOX News Channel.

There are many ways to say thank you to our nation’s troops and veterans. If you are looking for a way to help and get involved, below I’ve listed the Web sites of a few of the charities I support including my own, Operation Iraqi Children.

My guys did it!   Just a few days after cameraman John Templeton and I left the good sailors of the French Navy frigate Premier Maitre L’Her in Djibouti, Africa, they snagged a bunch of pirates trying to make a move a ship off Somalia.

Maybe you have heard about it : On the 1st we caught two pirate skiffs with 8 pirates, weapons, ladders.   We had to fire an intimidation shot, but it was OK.

I’m not surprised.   In the week we were out with them they were checking out everything that moved on the Gulf of Aden, investigating suspicious fishing boats, bigger ships, criss-crossing back and forth between Somalia and Yemen in the Gulf.

Then there was new word that another French ship thwarted some more attacks this past Sunday.   And that the latest European effort coupled with moves by the US and other nations was putting a dent into the pirate problem.

Update 4:17 pm in Gaza: I moved to a hotel in Ashkelon. I got to the room at 7am my time after hitting the “Geraldo at Large” show last night. By 11 the sirens and rocket strikes got me out of bed. I have my little handicam in the room. Producer Ian Rafferty and I chased after some of the grad strikes earlier.

It took us a while to get back to the hotel because the sirens kept wailing warning of new inbound rockets. We had to keep jumping out of the car and taking cover. The car doesn’t protect you from a rocket strike. The shrapnel can cut right through the doors and break the windows.

I got back and tried to sleep. No luck.  I read the wires and watched other newscasts. Now, I’m starting to feel a little tired.

3:00- drove back down to Gaza border.

4:20 – arrived to find art and air strikes “softening” the ground. A strange new smoke bomb was fired laying out fog by Gaza border.

5:30 – Eli fastman and I drive to see tank unit that had been staging near Erez crossing.

5:39 – Tanks are moving. We shoot with my little handheld video camera.

6:00 – We’re back at LIVE location. Air strikes and Artillery shake the night sky.
