Post-Inauguration in London

Well, after a marathon viewing session of Inaugural activities Tuesday — cameraman Olaf Wiig and I got up bright and early and sampled opinion of commuters at Kings Cross Station here in London.   Most had seen President Obama’s speech and liked it.

We also got a chance to check out the front pages of a lot of European newspapers.   Most treated the event like Obama was their own president with wall-to-wall coverage.

My favorite was our sister tabloid The Sun.   It ran full page  with a great picture of little Sasha Obama giving his father a thumbs up after proceedings at the Capitol were completed.   “You’re the Daddy” declared the headline.

European leaders were also gushing post-Inauguration. UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown declared the inauguration “a new chapter in American history and the world’s history”.

Hyperactive French President Sarkozy went further saying he’s eager for Obama to get to work so that with him “they can change the world”.

His government this week, though, already gave a sign there could be some pushing back from Obama mania, saying it’s not in the mood to send more combat troops to Afghanistan like President Obama wants.

Midland, TX: Home, Sweet Home

img_1961Why Midland? That was the question a lot of people asked when they heard that President Bush’s plane would be headed there directly from D.C. Why not Waco (near the President’s ranch in Crawford) or even Dallas (his new home)?

Coming to Midland, you can see its appeal for someone who’s spent the last eight years in Washington. Midland is sort of quintessentially West Texas. It’s flat, windy and dry. It’s oil country. And for President Bush, it’s friends who, as he said in his speech to a crowd of about 30,000, “liked me before I got into politics… liked me during politics… and liked me after.” This is red country, strong Bush territory karl_rove11populated by people who feel like they own a piece of him.  And they showed up in force, waving red white and blue “w’s” handed out by organizers of the “Welcome Home” event in Midland.

About an hour or so before the President was expected to arrive home, the line to get in snaked down the street, around the corner, along a couple blocks and back around another corner. They weren’t disappointed later when the plane carrying the President did a flyover of the event before landing.

Midland was President Bush’s boyhood home. And it was the site of the send-off party that sent him to D.C. and the White House. So to the Bush team, it only made sense that he would come here first, before heading off to his ranch in Crawford to relax, kris_g1and, eventually his new home in Dallas.

In Midland, President Bush was finally able to utter six words he says he’s been longing to say, “It is good to be home.”
