10 Years of Peace

Coincidentally, our trip to Northern Ireland comes 10 years after the peace treaty and it’s getting some press here in Europe. In this day when bashing democracy seems to be quite normal in parts of the world, it seems democracy is winning and in some cases thriving. Yes a ton of money has been pumped into the north, but as one man told me “they are beginning to see that peace and prosperity solves a few problems.” He continued, “Many of the fighters are now politicians!”

Rallying for Kosovo

As we hear that Kosovo has decided to lead itself, an amazing display rallied through Times Square into yesterday afternoon. As I walked out into the brisk late morning, I could hear the horns from several blocks away. As I approached Times Square I could see the cars, all draping the red flag of Kosovo and even marchers gathering at the crossroads of the world. Here is the video, I didn’t get the chance to get a ton, but at least some. Follow the link for more on its independence and also the nations that now criticize us for supporting freedom and this new nation.

Democracy at War

I have been meaning to post this for some time. Around the globe democracies are being attacked…are being threatened. The current situation in Kenya and for that matter in Venezuela are true and very real indication. Yet some people, even here in America, defend these and other movements to supress freedom.
According to Hoover Institution senior fellow Larry Diamond, in 1974, only 40 democracies existed–the vast majority in developed Western nations. By the end of 2006, according to Freedom House, there were 123 electoral democracies throughout the world. Despite democracy’s apparent prevalence, however, Diamond warns democracy is in danger. “Government corruption is the greatest threat to emerging democracies,” Diamond explains. “In countries like Kenya, the Philippines, and Venezuela, democracy is seriously under assault.” Keep Reading …
